The price of fly tying stuff...

So I spent my $30 certificate at the local hunting/fishing shop today....$26 on a large grizzly hackle saddle....and like $2.50 on some CDC feathers....Why are the saddles so much..? Oh well, tons of feathers on them and there are so many flies I couldn't tie because I didn't have the.

By the way, any fly tying books you recommend, anyone? I have the Fly Tyer's Bible and then another one given to me by a member on here;)

I'm looking for a new one, with various patterns, but including ones for like pan fish and what not also.

Fly tying materials can be pricey but if you think about the amount of flies you can tie from those materials its not to bad. What type of flies do you like to tie(Bass, Trout, etc) I manly make trout flies so I can't help you out much with Bass or Panfish flies. Feel free to send me a PM if you need any help with selecting materials, I would suggest getting a few videos to watch, it has been easier for me to learn from videos compared to books.

hackle is so expensive because they breed the birds specifically for fly tying. i guess a lot of work goes into breeding birds with the right type of feathers etc...we pay for that work.:D

fly tying can get expensive, but you'll see if you're careful your materials can last you a long time and you can get creative and use a lot of other materials that are cheap. I've used strips of plastic sandwich bags and all kinds of other stuff I've bought for cheap at craft stores.

Some is really expensive, no doubt. I tie saltwater flies, so some of the stuff used for freshwater applications never cross my mind. For hackles however, you can go natural or dyed in some cases....dyed being significantly cheaper. Of course, some simply can't be duplicated by dyeing I would figure. I used to shop at one store exclusively in NJ, but now that I'm down in NC, I just do some searches online for prices. Beware though, as with anything, crooks are everywhere.

I would also urge you to visit some craft shops...many items can be purchased there at 'craft' prices vice 'fly tying' prices. I make it a habit to cruise the store now and then just looking.

Good luck!
