KirkV
I am on the island of St. John in the carribean and we go to dinner tonight and it is just after dark. Across from where we are going is a small park area with a little grass for a baseball field, and what is strolling across center field in the dark????????? Thats right folks a whitetail deer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talking to a local tonight they were brought in a long time ago to St. Thomas for food and will swim across to this island. It is 2/3 national park and they are doing quite well. He said the amount of fresh water is the only thing that slows down the herd growth. He said a drought is devastating on the herd population on the island. I just never would have thunk it????????? Later Kirk:D

dbHunterNY
I'd get in big trouble if I hunted during vacation with my g/f, but.... I wonder just how big they can get. Draught probably works like winter up here, but you'd think they'd have lots of nutrition. What if the world record was there and nobody knew it? There's some food for thought. Thanks for sharing the interesting information, Dan

Wonder what subspecies they are?William they are (odocoileus virniniannus ) they scape from a pen during a hurricane in the late 1980's in ST John, they were also introduce to Jamaica and other island chain for there meat, but they also have become a pest to some of the farming communities in the islands:eek:

I would have assumed it would have been Key deer or some island subspecies like the Bull Island or Hunting Island, would not have expected the Virginia subspecies to be in the Caribbean, pretty cool stuff. Would be cool if you could get some pics Kirk. Hope you have had a great trip, sounds like the weather has been great.

KirkV
http://www.seestjohn.com/fauna_deer.html Here is a link to a site that talks about a wildlife restoration act of 1937 being resposible for the introduction of them initially. Pretty interesting, I will take a camera down tonight with me and maybe see if I can get a shot at one................ with the camera that is. Interesting thought though, if no squirrels are here does anything bother the sheds? Iguanna's lol? Later Kirk p.s. 85 and sunny, had to come in from the pool to get another cold Carib beer and lime. Sorry bout that!
