Darron
Has anyone ever used a winter rye, oat, wheat, crimson clover blend? I am planning on trying this blend in a wooded plot that receives filtered sun light. On the qdma forums, I have heard a lot of guys say cereal rye is very hardy and will grow in not so ideal conditions. Crimson clover is suppose to be somewhat shade tolerant from what I have read. I used wheat and oats in the plot last year and had decent results. Any opinions on a WR, oats, wheat and clover plot for a wooded plot with some shade? dogdoc
yes--rye is a great cereal grain and seems to be one of the most hardiest cereal grains. It is also very palatable to deer. I don't think you can go wrong with trying it in the shaded area. Crimson clover would be a nice plant to partner up with the rye.
wtnhunt
I am kind of partial to hamann farms clovers. If you can find any I would highly suggest pennington's wintergrazer rye to mix with whatever clover you decide on, pennington used to put out a blend with the rye grain and clovers that was an awesome mix, think it was called either rackmaker or rackmaster clover and rye supreme. Have had great results with the wintergrazer rye, used to be able to buy it from a local farm feed and supply store, but they closed and have not been able to buy it locally since. Have checked with cooper seeds and with seedland and neither one ever answered me with my question about buyng the wintergrazer rye from them, but pennington said that both still sold it when I talked with them on the phone. Darron
I have been looking for wintergrazer rye and cannot find it anywhere. I did find the rackmaker clover/rye mix on pennington's website, but can't find a dealer. Does anyone know what kind of clover is mixed with the rye? Sounds like a great blend, especially for shaded areas.
