preacherman
I am in the market for a squirrel gun and don't really know which way to go. I was wondering what gun and brand of gun that you shoot for tree rats? Looking forward to seeing these answers!

Doc
I've got a .22 Hornet that will be gathering squirrels as soon as the weather warms up above ridiculous. I just changed scopes so I need a little bench-time in something besides a blizzard. Doc

Rem308
I prefer squirrel hunting with a 22 or 22 WMR. I don't think you can go wrong with a good Marlin. They're affordable and I'm very pleased with mine.
goodnottygy
I like the .17 Savage. I cannot believe anyone would even think of using a shotgun. You must like biting into birdshot better than I do! OUCH!
toddyboman
ruger 10/22 rifle.
doubleA
Around the house I use a Browning BL-22 and the wife uses a Savage 93 both using .22 CB's. At the ranch I'll use anything from a .22, .17 HMR, .45, .223 Rem and .308.
PotashRLS
ruger 10/22 rifle. Me Too.
bluedog
(Early season (September/October) when the leaves are still on the trees, I use my Remington 870 20 gauge. Usually this time of year, I end up taking more running shots and can shoot one out of the tree branches even with the leaves. Also, I have to walk a large agricultural field to get to the woods where the squirrels are. In early season, doves are in season too. So I'll load the gun with 7 1/2's or 8's in case I flush out any doves while walking the field. Once I get to the woods, I'll switch to #6 shot. So I find the shotgun way more versatile in early season. As pointed out above though, it does take a little more effort to clean the squirrels afterwards. Once dove season is over and the leaves have fallen, I then switch to my .17 Savage. That is one sweet little gun.

redkneck
It depends to me what the mood is, and which gun is screaming for attention when i open the door to the gun closet. I use a .22 Mag, .22LR, .22 Shorts, and a winchester pump 20ga with mod choke. They all have advantages and disadvantages, esp the shotgun as was pointed out. But there's nothing like that pump action on some squirrells jumping limb to limb. On the other hand, i've gotten really fond of a .22 short in the last few years. Very accurate at close range and extremely quiet. I've shot quite a few bunnies in the head and laid them out. .223? .22 hornet? Do you guys have anything left of a squirrel after shooting them with that?
redkneck
I use that Switchback you sold me. I saw this video the other day. Dont knock it till you try it. Personally, them carbons and my shooting skills would require a small loan to feed the family... Sorry frat boys, i didnt see this in a Hoyt or Mathews version... Doc
I hear ya Big Boy!!! Either i aint worthy, or these down here wont hold still, so i aim for the biggest part on them! Well, rifle hunting i aim toward the front, lol..... Well, I do miss a few. When I am out strictly for meat hunting, the old shotgun has always been my weapon of choice. Other than the problem of having to spit bee-bees, that is the perfect squirrel gun for limiting out. Anytime I am out with the rifle, the motives change from food to challenge. And if those little critters don't stay still..........I make 'em stay still or they just get away. Doc
