Guest MarylandQDMA Posted February 2, 2005 Report Share Posted February 2, 2005 ok as most know I plan on going with RR soybeans this summer, and martins grower mix come sept. martins web page sugest using 5-14-42 (if my memery is right) at 250lbs per acre at time of seeding. what should I use for the RR soybeans? I was thinking of going with 19-19-19 for every thing but that was when I was thinking about using the fall blend. Closest thing I could find to what Martin suggested around here without getting into mixing it myself. Just remember the higher the nitrogen the more you promote weed growth in the spring and summer. Clovers will make their own nitrogen and so you want a lower first number or N value. Personally I would not use triple 19 on a clover plot around here. On the beans think Todd suggested to me using 13-13-13 if I remember right. Planning on planting some lab lab plus here this spring and will most likely follow Todd's suggestion. Legumes take their Nitrogen (the first number in the fertilizer numbers) from the atmosphere and store it in their roots in the form of nodes. Legumes don't need the first number at all. They are legumes and can fix their own nitrogen but it takes a while for the root nodules to get started so I recommend putting down some nitrogen at planting time. Don't worry about feeding the weeds/unwanted grasses b/c your going to nuke them with roundup during the summer. I also use a little nitrogen when planting my perennial legumes in the fall. You are going to have the weeds and grasses killed with your roundup and by the next spring the nitrogen you put down in the fall will be gone! Then in the spring when you re-fertilize the plot try to use the lowest nitrogen fertilizer you can find--even a fertilizer with no nitrogen like 0-24-24. todd Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

My pennington rackmaster clover plot last spring shot up really good with the 6-12-12 and did really well and I did not have any weeds really to speak of in that plot. Wont be long will be time to be fertilizing them again. Coop here will mix it up for you or will also sell you the individual components too, but not sure how much they charge buying in that small of an amount. Going to go ahead and disc my spring annual plot--throw down some lime--and then I will use the 3-pt tiller this spring when planting! Guest MarylandQDMA Posted February 3, 2005 Report Share Posted February 3, 2005 Re: food plot fertlizer I just talked to my coop they have a 10-20-20. he told me that for my 1/2 acre 250 lbs will do fine for the rr soybeans and the trefoil mix. he went on to say that I might want to just add the 10-20-20 in the spring when planting the soy. then by fall there will be little N and the potassium and potash will still be in high #'s come fall. there for not needing to add any fertlizer to the soil in the fall.
