stinking thieves

After I got back this morning from picking up a new tv and getting a few other things from town, my wife tells me a cabelas customer fraud rep called and asked if I had placed any online orders yesterday. Apparently someone made 3 charges on my account, thankfully the good people at cabelas are on top of things and they knew about this well before I ever would have found out.

So now the card we use for almost everything (we basically use it like a bank card and pay it off when it is due every month) has had to be locked down and we have to wait to get this straightened out and will end up having to get a new account. A bit of an inconvenience, but guess we will have to just use our atm card or cash until we get it resolved.

Have had problems with mail delivery in the past and with tampering with our mailbox, guess now we are not going to have any choice but to have to get a po box, which is going to be a huge inconvenience for us.:(

That really sucks big-time William. I hope they catch the person who used your card. Let's hope they don't have access to any other identification you have.

:(:(:(

With not knowing for sure where they got what information they got, that is what really concerns me Steve.:(

Cabelas did shut down that card, no more charges can be made on it. Don't think we will be responsible for those charges, but no more than they charged that is really the least of my worries.:(

Do you get to keep the Cabela's points the bad guys earned you? Searching hard for a silver lining for you, buddy...

HB

Doubt it Chris, actually going to lose some points by not having the card. Going to be a bit of an inconvenience, usually use that card for gas, groceries and to pay our phone and satellite bill every month too.

Check out this link about the theft of millions of peoples info being stolen last week.

Richard

Thanks for that link Richard, and welcome to the forums. Don't know for sure but sounds like that could be what happened.

Sorry to hear that William.:(

I use my Cabela's card the same as you.

Not a bad deal considering all the fee stuff you can get over the course of a year. I hope he/she/they get caught.

Did you pay for any additional protection with your card, or did Cabela's just take care of it for you anyway?

They are the best company to deal with in my opinion.

They are always checking for wierd transactions and now I even call them when I travel (otherwise they might suspend my card umtil I call). My wife had a card too years ago and it got to be a little more than we could pay off one month. We called them and they set up a low interest rate (5%) for a year instead of the 18% that it had.

We never charge more than we can pay back Frank, so never an issue with interest on any balance, we do have a low rate though. I don't think we are going to have to pay the charges, they have not shown up on the account, and the rep I spoke with said they would remove them, don't know if that will be before or after I fill out whatever paperwork is on the way though.

We do not pay any extra for additional services.

A few years ago, I had that happen and Cabela's took care of it and it never cost me anything!

The worst part of it, was that is was connected to eBay and Paypal. I have since closed both accounts!

I remember that Orlan, thought you had problems with your bank account too. I do have an ebay account, have paypal too and this card is tied to that paypal account. Looks like everything there was secure though.

Had the same thing happen here William and they never did catch anybody. Had to get a new card number and update everything associated with it.

Sorry:mad:

Seems it would not be too hard to track down where the merchant shipped to. I kind of hope that the purchases were stopped before they were shipped, but don't know if they were. Supposed to be getting paperwork in the mail in the next 7-10 days. Going to have our mail held for now.

What a scumbag.

What in the world makes thieves think they are entitled to other people's property?

Just makes me mad.

Yep, scumbags for sure. Looks like if it was this heartland security breach deal that we were one of many to be hit.

Copied this from cabelas site. Would be a good idea to check any accounts you have.

Heartland Payment Systems (not affiliated with Cabela's) announced a security breach on January 20, 2009.

Please be assured that Cabela's is actively monitoring the activity on your account to protect you from fraud. You will be contacted if you need to take any action. As always, we strongly encourage you to review your monthly statement carefully and call us immediately at 1.800.850.8402 if you see any suspicious transactions. As a Visa cardholder you are protected with Visa's Zero Liability policy*, which means you pay nothing for unauthorized purchases on your account. For more information about Visa's Zero Liability policy, visit www.visa.com/security.

Please review the following tips to reduce your chances of card fraud:

DO ...

  • Shred all personal and financial information - such as bills, bank statements, ATM receipts and credit card offers - before you throw it away
  • Keep your personal documentation (e.g., birth certificate, Social Security card, etc.) and your bank and credit card records in a secure place
  • Call the post office immediately if you are not receiving your mail - a thief can forge your signature and have your mail forwarded
  • Be aware of your surroundings when entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN) at an ATM
  • Limit the number of credit cards and other personal information that you carry in your wallet or purse
  • Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately
  • Review and consider whether you need currently inactive card accounts. Even when not being used, these accounts appear on your credit report, which is accessible to thieves. If you have applied for a credit card and have not received the card in a timely manner, immediately notify the appropriate financial institution.
  • Closely monitor the expiration dates on your credit cards - contact the credit issuer if the replacement card is not received prior to your credit card's expiration date
  • Sign all new credit cards upon receipt
  • Review your credit reports annually
  • Use unique passwords on your credit cards, bank accounts and phone cards (avoid using the obvious passwords - your mother's maiden name, your birth date or the last four digits of your Social Security or phone number)
  • Match your credit card receipts against monthly bills to make sure there are no unauthorized charges

DON'T ...

  • Volunteer any personal information when you use your credit card
  • Give your Social Security number, credit card number or any bank account details over the phone unless you have initiated the call and know that the business that you are dealing with is reputable
  • Leave receipts at ATMs, bank counters or unattended gasoline pumps
  • Leave envelopes containing your credit card payments or checks in your home mailbox for postal carrier pickup
  • Record your Social Security number or passwords on paper and store them in your wallet or purse
  • Disclose bank account numbers, credit card account numbers or other personal financial data on any Web site or online service location, unless you receive a secured authentication key from your provider

*Visa's Zero Liability policy covers U.S.-issued cards only and does not apply to commercial credit cards, ATM transactions or PIN transactions not processed by Visa.
