LETMGROW
I never gave a thought to whether I could watch the Super Bowl until this afternoon. Guess I can't. NBC is not available on my dish [ DISH Net. ] I live 70 miles from a station which carries NBC and where I live is down under where an antenna won't pick up the signal. I was on hold over 3 hours this afternoon after calling All American Direct and never got through. I am sure I'll be looking at another carrier very soon. Hope everybody else enjoys the game! buckbuster11
Seriously? Have you gotten NBC before? Do you get any other local channels?
wtnhunt
That stinks. We had issues with Dish letting us have our locals at one point probably 6 years ago, switched back to direct when that was going on.
VABuckSlayer
Sounds like I'm better off with Direct TV. Guess I won't switch now!
RangerClay
Lynn I have Dish as well. I believe the rules will be the same whether you have Dish or Direct. You must have an antenna to get channel 7? I got the Super Bowl (NBC) on Channel 3 Syracuse and Channel 6 out of Canada. The Canadian signal was better so I watched the game there and flipped back to Channel 3 for the commercials. I don't believe you will get local channels from Direct TV either. That rule comes from the Feds. Sounds like you need a better antenna.

Cajun-101
Well i have direct tv & we get the local channels but we cannot get them in HD. I have tried calling direct tv but they said i would have to see some other city. I found an HD antenna from best buy & it worked. Now i have to worry if it will still work with the digital switch in Feb. I got a call telling me it was time to upgrade my receiver from direct tv. I told the girl it would be fine just so it would not take off my HD channels. She assured me nothing was going to happen. Well low & behold the new receiver did not have the antenna port on the back. I called them & they told me this was one of the upgrades. I called for a couple weeks to switch back to my old receiver but they wanted to charge me 35 dollars to change them out myself. Thats when i got upset with the rep on the phone. I called back & spoke with a fella a couple days later when i cooled off. I begun the conversation with a little chit chat & man did it work he changed the receivers out over the phone for no charge & even gave me a 100 dollar credit on my bill. I felt a little better now i just have to find me a DVR/HD receiver with the antenna hook up.

We have HD/DVR on a dual reciever (runs 2 tv's on one reciever both have DVR but only TV1 is HD) that direct dosent offer
wtnhunt
When dish first came out the equipment was like a cheap knock off. I used to work with install and service both. RCA did have some issues with their equipent, but it was a better quality imho. Was working for a pretty big satellite company back in 1993 or 1994 and they sent me off and had me trained with rca/directv when they first came out, being a service manager for that company I trained our installers and techs on the equipment. Later installed and serviced dish as a subcontractor for a little while for a small company after I quit the other bigger company. Both dish and direct have had issues with locals, it is a matter in some cases of the local channels having issues with not allowing their channels to be broadcast in those markets over satellite and not necessarily the satellite provider that is actually at fault. We had direct, switched to dish, and later switched back to direct. Our locals were an issue with why we switched to dish in the first place only for them to end up being faced later with the same problem. Memphis is a little over 80 miles from here as a crow flies and without a tower type antenna and an amp we really would not get any kind of decent quality pics on the networks. We have not been without locals since being back on direct. I have to say though that I was thoroughly disappointed with dish when we switched back to direct. They wanted to charge to change programming unless it was an upgrade, they did not credit us back the month of programming that I had already paid for when I cancelled, and the rep I spoke with when I changed out was pretty rude. I considered going back to dish to get an upgrade to a an hd receiver, and they do have a nice model that has a dual tuner, however I just don't know about their customer service folks. Guest TennesseeTurkey
Guys just cause the stations are 80 or whatever many miles away dosent mean thats where the satellite is pointing....61.5 degrees is where the local channel satellite is in the sky..... wtnhunt
Guys just cause the stations are 80 or whatever many miles away dosent mean thats where the satellite is pointing....61.5 degrees is where the local channel satellite is in the sky..... Actually the distance of how far the stations are away has nothing to do with the satellite reception but potentially has everything to do with fcc regs. The satellites are fixed in geo stationary orbit 22,000 miles above the earth if I remember right. Your lattitude and longitude tells the direction(elevation and azimuth) your antenna will face, that may be 61.5 degrees elevation for where you are for the dish satellites. Here the satellites for direct are almost directly south, think it is like 210-215 for the azimuth and the elevation is around 45 degrees. There is also a tilt with the newer antennas. Having worked with c band satellite systems, the little dishes are relatively simple. Back to the networks, as best as I can recall there were challenges to whether or not local markets should be allowed to broadcast over satellite, some places apparently have not been successful or perhaps have had lapses with getting cooperation and getting those local networks cleared to be aired on dish network. May not be a bad idea to call the local networks or write them Lynn. When it all started out with there were only east and west coast network feeds and dish network I think added the regional market networks before direct did, but direct was first in the business. Actually when direct came out, there were two satellite networks to get programming through USSB and Direct, USSB carried the movie channels and direct carried the more general programming. USSB's existance was short lived and merged with Direct.
Chrud
I have Dish and get all the local channels. I could get FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC and WPT with an antenna and those are also the ones I get with Dish. An extra $5 a month but well worth it.
