KTMMIKE
I'm a little confused on how to figure a gross score on a buck with abnormal points. I basically have a main frame 9 point that has a subtotal score of 158 2/8 with an additional 7 5/8 of abnormal points. Would that make my gross score 165 7/8? I had it officially scored this week and it was 145 5/8 P&Y as a Typical. Here's how it broke down: Right antler: 68 4/8 Left Antler: 70 2/8 Spread: 19 4/8 Abnornal points: 7 5/8 Do I add all those together to get the gross score? Rhino
Just add up everything without netting anything out Mike.
layin on the smackdown
Technically, the abnormal points do not get added to the total gross if it is scored as a typical. They are kind of just thrown aside (in the pope and young/boone and crocket book). Your deductions come from differences in specific tine length...ie L G1 8 R G1 7.5 total deduction for G1's is 0.5 inches. Thats all for show though. If i were you i would do what he said above....just add all the numbers up and thats what i would say he grossed...because technically, that is really how many inches of antler he has, and what class deer he really is... layin on the smackdown
Thats what I do. I give 'em what they grow:) And really, thats what they deserve...For example, the giant by my signiture Total inches of antler...178 6/8 Total Gross....169 7/8 Total Net...146 5/8 He is by no means a 140-150 class deer....he is every bit of 178, so thats what i tell people he grossed. If someone thinks i am deceiving others, well, we have a problem don't we...:D:D:D
fly
Good question, I was planning to ask that very question after scanning a score sheet just to see how RT forum members calculate it. I asked P&Y last year. They responded by stating that according to them the final net score is the only score they are concerned with. That tells me a hunter is on his/her own as far as calculating the gross score. I do what smackdown does. I add up the total number of inches (normal and abnormal) for a total number of inches. That to me is the gross score. Afterall, gross means total before deductions. An example: My 07 season buck: Final net score after deductions came to 162&2/8 inches Total abnormal points: 1&3/8 inches Total for normal points (listed as subtotal on P&Y score sheet) = 169 & 3/8 inches I indicate my Gross score = 171&2/8 inches (NOT 169 & 3/8). >Frank Hey smackdown, you're right he doesn't look like a 140-150 class deer. I was kinda thinking he looked like a (doe with glued on antlers) class deer. LOL Seriously though, he's a awesome looking buck! Dakota
And really, thats what they deserve...For example, the giant by my signiture Total inches of antler...178 6/8 Total Gross....169 7/8 Total Net...146 5/8 He is by no means a 140-150 class deer....he is every bit of 178, so thats what i tell people he grossed. If someone thinks i am deceiving others, well, we have a problem don't we...:D:D:D That is ridiculous saying he's a 140-150 class deer! He's a booner for sure! Rhino
Just so you'll know...starting with the Boone & Crockett Club's 26th Big Game Awards (2004-2006) both the gross and net scores are listed in the book. Obviously they're on on 27th awards period now. That is ridiculous saying he's a 140-150 class deer! He's a booner for sure! Dakota Boone & Crockett is another club Dakota so technically he's not a booner but he sure is a upper 170's class buck in my book.
Flintlock1776
That is why I like Jackie Bushman's approach. Why deduct anything from a great experience. Just go for the total measurement. Cleaner & easier to understand.

ildrhntr
I sympathize with all of your opioins I have a buck that had over 173 inches of antler but is in the book at 154 inches, unfortunately you can not call it a Boone and Crocket or Pope and Young buck without following there system of measurerment. okiedog
unfortunately you can not call it a Boone and Crocket or Pope and Young buck without following there system of measurerment. True..... thats why I just say "it grossed (total inches)" and leave the B&C and P&Y off the end of the statement:cool:
Elwood
Unless you have had it officially scored, paided the fees, and put in the books you can not call it nothing but a great deer. The deductions are just part of the game. Even the world record had to go through the process. Nice deer Dude Elwood
