Re: Ok! Admit it......

Honestly...it took awhile to get used to it.

I can remember when I would carry the light with the most candlepower into the woods and be at the truck before the sun was completely down.

I geuss sometime in the past I got over it realizing that the weapon in my possesion was all I needed.....and staying in the stand until after dark made me get used to using what ever night vision I had availible....most of the time I walk out with a small mag-light hanging off of my backpack now. I turn it on and try not to look at it much, point it at my compass(to charge its glow in the dark capabilities), and loop it on my pack....with it up front it ruins my night vision

Re: Ok! Admit it......

I have always been pretty comfortable in the woods in the dark, until one night last seaon during early bow season. there was still full foliage on the trees, and it got windy, and it was cloudy. I was about 45 minutes from my truck, alone. For some reason, that night, every noise spooked me. Its the only time I can remember being freaked out in the woods in the dark.

Re: Ok! Admit it......

I'm not scared of the dark, but am leary about what can happen when it is impossible to see it coming.

I had a deer run at me full till one morning, and came to a screaming stop when I feared I was going to be trampled. He just turned and walked off after scaring the heck out of me.

Had one follow me to my treestand, and could actually hear the wind coming out of his nostrils he was so close. Had sprinkled some doe in estrus on my boot pads that morning, but didn't have time to rid myself of the pads. Had to spook that bad boy off, didn't know what else to do!

The time I actually felt my hair stand on end was when I had seen a monster buck in my headlights, and knew I had to go that way to get to my stand. Couldn't see squat because of a low hanging fog when I got over towards where I had seen him, but knew instantly that I had screwed up when I heard him come trotting over towards me. He snort wheezed, and I about blew a gasket. I actually took an arrow out of my quiver to try to protect myself if I had to. That was another one that I could hear breathing, he was so close. I lightly whistled at him, as best as I could, and after a few very tense seconds, he just turned and walked off. I almost had to dump my drawers out that time.

So, it isn't the dark that bothers me.... crazy.gif

Re: Ok! Admit it......

I am not scared of the dark, but there was one time when I did get scared. I was only eight years old and it was my first season hunting by myself. My grandfather would always take me to my stand and make sure I got up there alright and then he would come and get me when he was ready to go, and he'd usually tell me when it was going to be. There was one time when we hunted in the afternoon and of course it was dark before he came and got me. I don't know why, but that evevning it got dark faster than it normally did. I had been sitting in my stand for a while in the dark and he still hadn't came to get me. I started to worry about all kinds of silly things. Did he get hurt? Did he forget I was in my stand? LOL Is he lost? I couldn't climb down from the stand with the gun, but I was contemplating just leaving it there and going to the truck. Then what would he think if he got there and I was gone? Turns out he was hunting a lot further away than he normally does and it just took him a while to get there. It was mostly just fearing the unknown. He got a good laugh out of it though, cause he could see that I was worried.

Re: Ok! Admit it......

don't get me wrong--i've been spooked by yotes, owls, coons and possums fighting, but generally speaking, no, i'm not afraid of the dark.

the way i look at it is this: there's nothing in Ohio that can hurt me or threaten me, especially while i'm carrying a weapon grin.gif

have to think rationally i guess

Re: Ok! Admit it......

I was hunting my in-laws place in Arkansas and my pop-in-law was having trouble with a bear that was tearing up his corn feeders. Anyway--he hung a stand for me deep in the woods on a main trail and drew me a map---well anyway--here I go exploring with a flashlight trying to find this stand and get totally turned around and lost. So I just find a nice tree and sit down beside it and thought I would wait for first light to find the stand. Well anyway--here I am sitting next to this tree--not knowing what direction I am facing and I hear something moving behind me---I am convinced it was that darn bear ready to munch on my tiny biceps. I take an arrow from my quiver and have it ready to use like a spear. My hard is pounding so loud--I'm just praying that my scent lock suit will prevent him from smelling me---I have never been so scared in my life. The noise gets closer and I'm ready with my arrow! Finally i begin to make out the shape in the early light and it was a doe picking acorns in the dry leaves!

So yes---I do get scared when walking in the dark !

Re: Ok! Admit it......

Just had to bring this up, didn't you Griz?? LOL!!! Usually, if I am walking in bymyself, yep, I get scared. I start hearing things, and my mind starts wondering, and after darn near stepping on a copperhead last year, then feeling like I was being stalked by a yote, I'll probably be a nervous wreck this year!!

Re: Ok! Admit it......

Nope not at all. My attention is more focused on stealth than anything else. It is pretty annoying to be slipping through the woods in the dark and have a spider web wrap around your face though. You just know that darn spider is somewhere on your forehead or between your eyes. Now that does bug me. grin.gif

Re: Ok! Admit it......

I'm not scared of the dark but I had the holy terror scared out of me one time. I was hunting behind this old chuch that was built in the 1800's. Of course I was going in right behind the cemetery and a lot of weird things had happened around there. There were rumors of devil worshippers, graves dug up, headstones bashed, etc. Well I was a young and a little nervous about hunting there anyway. Most times it didn't bother me.

I was hunting one evening and kept hearing something in the thicket I was in and never could see it. It circled me 3 times and followed me when it got dark that evening. After about 100 yds of something moving parallel to me I high tailed it out of there. I came back the next morning to hunt a stand close to that but was on the edge of a cutover. I got out the truck that morning, got all geared up and started moving. I hardly ever carried a light anyway. Well I started working down the edge of the cutover to get to my stand and could hear something on the move in the woods. Finally it moved on off so I thought Whew... I took a couple of slow steps and stepped square in the middle of a cuvvy of quail, they came up in a fluttering flurry of feathers and one actually hit me when it came up. I screamed so loud (several expletives involved) I scared everything within 5 miles. I don't think my heart started back for about 10 minutes..
