Bruce Schmeck
Re: Ok! Admit it...... [ QUOTE ] I was hunting my in-laws place in Arkansas and my pop-in-law was having trouble with a bear that was tearing up his corn feeders. Anyway--he hung a stand for me deep in the woods on a main trail and drew me a map---well anyway--here I go exploring with a flashlight trying to find this stand and get totally turned around and lost. So I just find a nice tree and sit down beside it and thought I would wait for first light to find the stand. Well anyway--here I am sitting next to this tree--not knowing what direction I am facing and I hear something moving behind me---I am convinced it was that darn bear ready to munch on my tiny biceps. I take an arrow from my quiver and have it ready to use like a spear. My hard is pounding so loud--I'm just praying that my scent lock suit will prevent him from smelling me---I have never been so scared in my life. The noise gets closer and I'm ready with my arrow! Finally i begin to make out the shape in the early light and it was a doe picking acorns in the dry leaves! So yes---I do get scared when walking in the dark ! todd [/ QUOTE ] I thought you were gonna tell us it was Bill Clinton with one of his bimbo girlfriends. The moral of this tale is: Don't hunt near Todd when it's dark out!

buckbuster11
Re: Ok! Admit it...... I dont know if I would say scared...but maybe a little tense. There really isnt anything to be scared of in the PA woods except for aliens and bigfoots, but I think it's only natural to be a little uptight when your by yourself in the dark. IowaDeerHunter
Re: Ok! Admit it...... I am not scared, but get nervous, sometimes. I get more nervous walking through the timber than on a field edge. BUT the dark can be the best times though!

Griz
Re: Ok! Admit it...... Here's ya story... About 3 years now I had a young man that started bow hunting whating me to take him out hunting. So I went and hung 2 stands for us to hunt out of. The stands were about 300 yards or in the woods. I have been seeing deer in that area so I thought this would be a good place for us to set up at.... Well Sat. morning comes around and he shows up bright and early. 4:30am. We didn't have a moon at that time so it's was really dark.... When he got to my house I asked him if he was ready hunt.... So off we went.... Once I got the truck parked and we geared up we had to walk a good 500 yards before entering the woods.... As we were walking along the young man grabbed the back of my shirt and said "Griz! Aren't you going to turn a light on?" I told him no and kept walking.... I just we walked about 200 yards up into the woods and I stopped pretty fast and said "What's was that"... I thought right then and there I was going to lose to pour kid... Well when that happened I started to have some fun.... Now you have to remember it is dark as all get out and first light isn't for a good hour or less at this time.... Well when we got to the stands. Before I could get his bow tied to the pull up line he was in the stand asking me if I was ready.... I looked up at him and "Did you check for snakes before you got into the stand"...LOL And he said "SNAKES"... I nearly died laughing.... After we got all settled in and the sun started to peck he started to calm down.... When we got done hunting that Sat. I never seen him again...LOL I see him once in a while and ask him if he wants to go hunting with me.... He said he would as long as I go out at noon...LOL

I know you have a DU sticker on your truck. The "Ain't Skeered" reference was done in humor, teasing you about being a redneck. Tony
Re: Ok! Admit it...... [ QUOTE ] Just had to bring this up, didn't you Griz?? LOL!!! Usually, if I am walking in bymyself, yep, I get scared. I start hearing things, and my mind starts wondering, and after darn near stepping on a copperhead last year, then feeling like I was being stalked by a yote, I'll probably be a nervous wreck this year!! [/ QUOTE ] Jason , Dale told me that story and we were laughing with you not at you !
buckee
Re: Ok! Admit it...... The dark doesn't scare me at all, it's those big black hairy things and very large brown cats that eat meat that worry me when I'm walking into my stand. I have had a few unpleasant encounters with blackbears in the dark and in the light ...LOL. Cougars just plain give me the willys, but I still go and get back into my stand as quick as I can when it's dark. I always breath a bit easier, once I'm safe in my stand. Nothing else bothers me about the dark around here....just those two critters

elkoholic
Re: Ok! Admit it...... After having walked many miles in the dark over the last forty some years, either going to or from my truck/camp, I have a bit of advice, when a large animal starts breaking brush and woofing/growling at you, it is best to keep on trucking and acting like you own the place. Also, if you stop and a small critter approaches, do not wait until it starts to climb your leg before reacting and if you do, do not try to grab it to remove it, for even little critters have sharp teeth. Stories to tell, oh my! One other thought, if you do travel in the dark a lot, it is a good idea to wear a pair of safety goggles to protect your eyes from unseen branches and such. If you are not traveling in the dark, that means you are leaving (or going to) your hunting spot when you should be hunting, for the first and last hour of light are the best times.
