Im going to talk with a few landowners soon. Going that way we would have only a tresspass fee ( $100 a day or so) Outfitters too are feeling the pinch of the ecomomy so we have alot of time . ill keep ya posted

Ain't that the truth. :( No one is immune from it, Tim. Take your time, buddy, we're in no hurry! ;)

Dakota :)

Tim, I agree with you on a trespass fee type of hunt. There is good hunting to be had in many places for a whole lot less than most would think. I can agree that the cost of tags and licenses are getting out of hand. States where you need to draw a tag should also be on the no list. I also think that the location of the hunt should be centrally located. I think the best bang for the buck would be Missouri with its many state conservation areas, over the counter permits, and the ability to hunt deer and turkeys in the same season on the same license.

I certainly agree with that. License and tags are relatively cheap compared to other states and it's over the counter so no need to apply ahead of time. Also if you're looking at a deer hunt, depending on how the vote goes (gun vs. bow) you can go either way there. Their gun season opens while their rut is still going on. Your best options are bow hunt right before the gun season (1st part of Nov.) or gun hunt the opening days of their Nov. gun season. If you choose to gun hunt there's no problem with type of weapons restrictions either.

If you're looking at contacting landowners you know and pay them a tresspass fee that means taking our own stands. No problem here but something everyone needs to know. That also means someone being in charge of the organizational logistics that have to be worked out. For example, who goes where and where are the hunting boundaries drawn for each hunter. I'm certainly in favor of hunting private land though.

Personally, I won't make a road trip to hunt public ground because it's just too far to have too many unknowns when it comes to hunting.

As far as cost goes that's not a problem for me unless this country goes into a depression and the stock market collapses. Then we're all in trouble anyway.

My only issue will be how the timing works out with any plans I have if it's a Nov. deer hunt. I'm part of a group of old deer hunters (bow hunting only) that pays for private leases in KS and IA. Assuming I draw a tag in either state for 2010, if I have a conflict between that and a forum trip I'll have to miss the forum trip. If not, I'm in. ;)

Tim,

That is a good idea. I will make a call to a friend in Missouri. Maybe we can get a whitetail hunt reasonable. If 10 people or more are interested we can probably get a group discount.

The tags are over the counter and aren't as expensive as Illinois.

I will try to find out by tonight!

Darla

And Missouri is not far from us, we could drive up same day and not have much expense. Would probably be able to afford around $1,500. But not much more. Would have to give work some notice. Between me and my hubby only one of us could come (so the other one stays home with the kids/farm). Would probably bring our oldest daughter along. Sounds like some great ideas.

Heard a seminar by Pat Reeve today. He was talking about deer hunting out of state.

He said it takes about 3 years to get a non-resident tag in Iowa, so that's out. He did say it would be his first choice (the southern portion) for public ground deer hunting.

He said that Kansas has a great deal of public land and little hunting pressure in the South Western part of the state. He also said there isn't much timber but that there are some big deer. He indicated tags were not as expensive and easier to get as well (Not sure of the cost). The Kansas DNR sends out information about public hunting grounds if asked. If one likes hunting ditches and ravines this might be an option. Sounded pretty cool to me anyway.

Kansas also seems like a fairly central location for a lot of our members. I might go for something like that. Possibly a hog hunt. Have to see when it would be. It's difficult for me to get away during the fall. I'd have to find a substitute teacher for how ever many days I'd be gone.

id love to go...it sounds like it would be a heck of a time...but some of the prices i have seen on here are not even close to affordable for me...i may be speaking for others, or maybe just myself...unless its a diy (which i would prefer) or a turkey trip somewhere, there is no way i could afford to do it...plus, i live in a big buck state, so i couldn't see myself paying outrages $$ to chase giant white tails when i can do it for almost nothin on my own. I think maybe we should talk about two forum hunts...one for the members who want to chase turkeys or deer on a diy, and one for members who want to use an outfitter...

just my two cents as well...

This sounds great, i would be interested in a deer hunt for some biguns!!

Kansas does have great deer, Nebraska? Missouri?

If we did a turkey hunt i would love to kick some Florida bird butt!!:D And Complete the slam for me!

I already hunt public land so a tresspass hunt would be a huge step up, i also favor a little less pricey so more could show. IMO

Thanks Tim for looking into this for all of us:)
