slow steelheading

Anyone been out? I have been going out here and there but everything has been real slow. I have fished several different rivers in the past 2 months and only have caught one steelhead. Every body else has said the same thing. Fished for walleye last week and ended up hooking a ton through the ice, but only landed 4. For some reason they weren't sticking.

So, how is everyone elses steelhead season been so far?

Here is a video I took on my last trip:

Our rivers have been frozen over for a long time, so I can't even remember the last time I was out. It was probably early January though.

That thaw opened them all up, but we had a day of heavy rain and all that ice is clogging up at the mouths and every river here is at flood stage.

I'm hoping some of the smaller tribs are fishable by Monday because I have the day off. I might make the drive into PA if our rivers aren't fishing.

I need to come up there.

If you can catch 17, I could probably catch..........like................ at least 1.

:D

So much depends on the weather- but if the streams are flowing good...I'll get you hooked into a lot more than just one my friend.:D The offer stands. Fly or bait...we'll bring both. It was a good day, but if I would have had 7 lbs. flouro instead of the 6 lbs. test (all I had with me) I could have landed another half dozen. Only fished 5 hours or so too, one of the better days I've had in some time.

That's awesome Muggs!

How's the fishing the first week of January?

I'm off work that week every year.

>Frank

Hey Frank,

That's probably one of the tougher times of year, but you can still do really well. The main issue is making sure the rivers aren't frozen over, but ususally, they're still open that time of year. It's towards the end of January they lock up.

You just have to find the slower, deeper holes, and make sure you're drifting your flies right along the streambed.

If you're gonna come give it a shot, let me know and I can show you around.

Not this time Fred. The cheap digi I use for fishing hasn't bee working when it's below freezing out side. I've been looking on craigslist for cheap cameras, found a ton of them for under $50 but I don't want to spend the $$ if the thing is gonna have the same issue. The camera worked fine in the same type of weather when it was new though...so I'm sort of at a loss.

I do have tons of steely pics though. I posted some a few months ago in this room if you want to do a search.

Keep it up against your body; inside your waders.

That's not a warm area either when you're standing in water that is below freezing...only reason it's not icey up is the fact it's moving. Can you say "shrinkage?":D

Ummmm, yep. One time in Erie after looking for an ice fisherman and falling through twice, got a major case of shrinkage that had a grip on the little guy for a few hours. Didn't think he was ever going to come back. :D

I know. TMI

How about armpit? Make a little holster of sorts.

That's actually a pretty good idea...maybe even hang it from a lanyard and put that down inside a few layers of clothing. Because even on the inside pocket of my waders, it wasn't warm enough there, but getting it closer to my body heat and insulated behind some wool sweater or something might just work.

Another thing I thought of would be to use one of those little hand warmers or a toe warmer. Stick the warmer in an old sock, wrap the camera in there with it. I know I keep my camera in my breast pocket and it keeps it warm.
