Conditioning for Turkey season

I have always known I have been out of shape for turkey season. But last year a group of us went to Wyoming and oh my gosh. I thought my heart was going to blow out of my chest. Now I know elevation had a influence on it some. This year my two buddies and I are going for the slam in one year. So I started trying to lose weight last fall (so far 30 lbs lost) and started working out at the YMCA five times a week. Doing a lot of cardio interval training. Bike, tread mill at an incline and the elliptical machine. I cant believe how much my energy has boosted up. Hopefully I can drop 10 more lbs before season. I was wondering what special things people do to get into shape for the turkey woods.

I've been working out on campus about 3-4 times a week, mostly on the bikes. I bike for about 45 minutes each day and always have two bottles of water on hand to cool my body temperature and for hydration. On average, during the 45 minutes I'll bike 4.7 miles and burn between 550-650 calories with about 80 RPMs. It's been working thus far! :D

I keep my trigger finger loose by playing call of duty on my playstation3 and am currently waiting on killzone 2 witch comes out feb 27th and lift weights 12 oz at a time. All jokes aside,I think this will be a tough year for me in the turkey woods.I have been haveing cronic head achs and have already had an mri done that was found to be ok.This friday I am doing a sleep test to find out if I have sleep apnea, and march 4th I am haveing a spinal tap to measure the presure on my brain to see if the docs can figure out what might be causing my headachs. If they cant figure this out soon I am going to go crazy, shortness of breath and my head throbbing may keep me out of the woods some this spring,at least keep me from runin and gunin.:o

Huntingman,

Not to simplify your problem because I do not know all the details. But My wife fought headaches like that for years. They would last as long as 29 days straight. Nothing helped. But then she gave in and tried a Chriopractor (which I am not a big believer in) but it sure did help her. Now that is the first thing she does when she feels it coming on. Just a though if you get to your wits end. Hope it works out for yea. Noone should have to miss the turkey woods.

I go for 2-3 mile walks with my family, jogging intermittently and working my way up to faster and longer running. Plus as spring approaches, I try to get out on some extended scouting hikes and carry some gear (weight) while doing it.

I also have a daughter who keeps me busy playing basketball, soccer, throwing around a football, etc., which helps.
