JimT
Any CoreLokt type sp bullet will be fine. You do not need premiuim ammo to kill deer.
VABuckSlayer
Re: whats the best ammo for deer I use Lightfield slugs and can say they are awesome on deer. I've taken deer from 15 yards to 100 yards with them and they flat smoke em! Eric
wtnhunt
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Never have used any slugs, but the corelokts in my .270 do the job very effectively.
Tominator
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Most guys will tell you to try a bunch and see what patterns best in your particular gun. For me and my Express 870 slug barrel it's the Winchester 3" mag. sabot.
Ohiobucks
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Rifled or smooth bore shotgun? I have a rifled bore in my Winchester 1300 pump gun. I can punch holes in paper pretty well with the Partition Gold sabots from Winchester, but had a few problems hitting deer last year with them......something tells me it wasn't the loads. Missed160
Re: whats the best ammo for deer I have a smoothbore barrel, and never had a problem with the Brenneke style slugs. They are as accurate as I am out to about 75yards. Without spending the money for a rifled barrel, I think thats about the best I can expect.. magnatecsteve
Re: whats the best ammo for deer [ QUOTE ] what is the best type of ammo slug wise for deer? [/ QUOTE ] WHATEVER IS MOST ACCURATE/CONSISTENT....I've had deer just flat drop even with my round ball shootin' muzzleloader. Then again some deer seem to go for ever with no heart or lungs left...??? I say stick with what is the best shooting.

billygoat
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Tominator is right, get out there and throw several different brands of slugs down range, find out which one groups the best for your average shot (make sure you clean your barrel after each brand is shot). Best of luck.
too_pointer
Re: whats the best ammo for deer What type of choke do you have, a rifled choke ? It makes a big difference. I used to use Win. 2-3/4 rifled slugs with a rifled choke and is was great out to about 80 yards. I knocked a 6 & 8 pt. down really quick using them. I now have a fully rifled barrel, so I use sabots which is much more accurate and extend my range quite a bit. too_pointer
AJ
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Have you figured out what that barrel's choke is?
AJ
Re: whats the best ammo for deer OK, if you look at the left side of the barrel near the receiver, it should have a couple few stamps. This will tell what the choke is. Here are the codes: * = full choke *- = improved modified choke ** = modified choke **- = improved cylinder choke **$ = skeet choke *** = cylinder bore (no choke)

AJ
Re: whats the best ammo for deer Usually, guns shoot slugs best when shot through an improved cylinder choke. I have seen guns that shot good groups with modified and even full chokes. With your original barrel, or other smoothbore, I would try Remington Sluggers, Brenneke Rottweils, Federal Power Shok rifled slugs, etc. If you get a rifled barrel, a sabot will give better accuracy and more downrange energy. there are a variety of good sabots on the market. longislandhunter
Re: whats the best ammo for deer I've always used "federal" premium sabot 12 gauge slugs in my Remington 870 special purpose rifled barrel slug gun. They've always produced nice tight groups out to 100 yards and have always taken down deer extremely well.
