Bagpipe lessons

Well I've talked about learning for years now. My wife went and bought me a chanter and a lesson for V-day. I went for the first lesson today and found out my fingers don't always work like I want them to. Too bad it's not as easy as a deer grunt call.

Anyone play or ever thought about it?

I love the pipes. We like to go to the Can-Am Fest in July. Dozens of the Canadian pipe and drums corps come down and march in the parade. It's a real treat to go see.

When you get half way decent be sure to record something for us.

I love the sounds of a bagpipe. In the town where my cousins live, they have a town festival called the "Highland Festival" which is because it is a Scottish type town. After the parade on Saturday we head to the pub(yeah, kinda early :D), and eventually the bagpipe players who were in the parade make there way there and play a few songs. It's a good time. Then eventually we head over to the main festival area (you know, beer tent :D, games, and other fun stuff), they have things like the Caber (sp?) toss, and other scottish type games. It's a great time and usually the whole town is out and about that day. Usually the bagpipe players make their way to the beer tent while we are there also. dang...is it summer time yet??? :D:D

Bagpipes are very moving, and they can make people quite emotional. Amazing Grace for example.

Our union has a band of pipers called the Sword of Light. http://www.swordoflight.com/

They took 1st place at the Dublin millennium in Ireland and are always there to volunteer for members funerals and even happy occurrences. I have seen them play many times over my 23 years in the local. They are wonderful sounding band and I have a few friends who are in it also.

Good Luck learning the pipes Danny boy:D!

Learning how to play music is a good thing.

I have played the pipes now for over 40 years. My grandfather was Alex Sutherland, Pipe Major of the Blackwatch band here in Nova Scotia. He and my uncle started the Dartmouth Boys Pipe and Drum Band...that is why they wear the Sutherland tarten.

One of the provincial gatherings of pipers is the Piper's Picnic in Earltown:

Bernie is my older brother...one of the most gifted, natural pipers I have ever heard...he was offered a commission in the Army to play in the Blackwatch, when he graduated high school but turned it down.

The area I used to hunt on the west side of Cape Breton is predominantly Scottish...and they know me down there for 2 reasons...

1) They call me 'The Bowhunter' when fall arrives, because I was the first to hunt that way with a bow...

2) In the early summer, they knew me as 'one of the pipers'...because they all waited for my brother and I to arrive...

We could call a Scotsman in from better'n 5 miles, on a clear, still evening !!! :D

Definately an outdoor instrument, though!

I can remeber my son warning his sister..."Run, Natalie !!...RUN...He's gonna blow !!!" :D:D (Same dry wit as my grandfather...little bugger...:D:D)

Oh...I should mention that the 'Picnic' is held on property that holds some of the biggest deer this province has...It'd make most hunters drool.

They had a hard time keeping me focused on the pipes 'cause I was always off tracking...Awesome spot !!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

I've been practicing every day so far and I finally managed to get my ring finger to lift before my pinky. It's all my wife's doing. She knows I'd never spend the money it takes to do this (30 bucks a lesson) so she gave me a jump start by giving me the first lesson and chanter as a present.

She's a pretty cool women even though she's a vegetarian.:D

Bagpipes are not cheap and run close to a grand, so if anyone comes accross a used set for a decent price keep me in mind. It'll be some time (at least 4-6 months) before I'm ready to advance past the chanter to the pipes.
