silvertip_co
We usually do our online Colorado DOW big game tag draw selections this time in Feb so I put in for a bunch of stuff. Put in for first rifle (which is really a late like 3rd rifle) at 3Forks Ranch and three others on RFW draws just to accumulate points, but will probably have to do OTC bull when we dont draw for elk. Same old thing. Also put in for second rifle in 55 and 35 for mulies but will probably end up with leftover leftover in 28 like last year( but we got the place and the deer and elk all figgered out now so 28 aint a bad last of the last choice). One year I need to put in for 37/371 thats good for elk too. The draws are all after April 17 deadline I think. Lotta darn typing, almost as bad as doing income taxes. Guess next month I'll buy my OTC spring gobb and put in for archery elk tag of some sort. Good luck to all you other big game tag lotto players. Maybe gas wont be 4.15 a gallon this fall. RalfZabotskowitz
Silvertip, Were you trying to draw Three Forks for a cow or a bull? Three Forks for a cow is as close to a gimme as there is in Colorado. It takes at least one point. If you (or your Wife or Daughter) really want to shoot a cow try drawing 3 forks. My Wife hunted it a few years ago and shot her cow out of a group of 600+ animals. I have a couple of friends whose kids draw 3 forks every other year, they always tag out. They provide a guide free of charge (you have to hunt with one of their employees) and will help you get your critter out of the woods. It's a great hunt for those who don't want to venture too far from the road or want to put meat in the freezer. Ralf
silvertip_co
COol thanks for the input. We'll see in June how we do I guess. I would like some freezer meat ( altho the taste of antlers lasts wayyyy longer )

silvertip_co
that cow things sounds like a real good plan to me, charlie. good luck. I took this guy I met offa here out to scout for turks last Sat. Saw 5 bigshorn sheep ewes and 12 mulies( no antlers). He told me about a 500.00 ranch cow elk hunt near Raton. I think I may try that also if he gets me the info, the tag is cheap and the trespass is 500.00 and they are loaded with elk he says. Details at 11... RalfZabotskowitz
Silvertip, $500 is a whole lot of brass for just a cow elk. You really ought to save the money and draw a tag at Three Forks RFW. Ralf
silvertip_co
I look at it this way, since coming to COlorado 6 yrs ago I've spent over 15800.00 on hunting trips camper trailer tags food gas beer film ammo rope backpacks and 'stuff' and got nothing but a doe mulie and a **** of a lot of satisfaction and and equal amount of disappointment. Somehow a 500.00 roll of the dice on a 50/50 shot seems, well it seems cheap to me. Thats a dollar a pound for cow elk plus a 1.11 to process, and 30-70 hamburg in Kroger is more than that. Silvertip, $500 is a whole lot of brass for just a cow elk. You really ought to save the money and draw a tag at Three Forks RFW. RalfZabotskowitz
At $46 an elk tag and a 90% or better chance to kill a cow at Three Forks, well, that seems to be a better deal. RZ
Dakota
A cow elk sounds real nice, Charlie! I think I'm going to be applying for cow elk here in SD this year too. I've been away from elk country for far too long! Dakota
