PotashRLS
Today around midmorning my brother stoked the fire in the stove in the garage at his house(grandparents old home that I own) and we were meeting out to the land for a day of clearcutting/firewood making. I was heading out to meet my two brothers when I pass them cruising back toward town with their flashers on really "hauling the mail". They called me on my cell but we were disconnected prior to answering so I couldn't find out what was going on. I whipped a Uey in the highway and headed back too but couldn't catch them. I happened to leave my squad radio at home on the charger as I was not on call and now assumed something bad was happening. I finally get ahold of them and they tell me his garage is on FIRE. The garage is attached to the house. We quick pull in next door at Mom & Dad's to make room in the driveway for the Fire Dept. and go in to see what was up as no smoke is visible. Turns out my brother's girlfriend was inside and smelled the smoke coming into the house. She checked the fire to find the garage full of smoke and flames on the wall by the woodstove and the backdoor. She quickly hauled 5 gallon pails of snow in and threw on the flames and knocked them down. We were unsure if it got into the roof and started hauling all the guns, ammo and important stuff out as the Fire Dept. pulled drywall and panelling off to see if the fire traveled. Luckily it did not and ended up with cosmetic damage in the stove area of the garage and smoke in the house. That is it.:eek: I own the house on a land contract with Grandpa and Gramma as they are in the nursing home. I let my brother and his girlfriend live there for the cost of the taxes, insurance, and the land contract payment totalling $255/month. Insurance would not have covered the lose due to the woodstove because he technically isn't suppose to be using it. I and we dodged a huge bullet and I thanked the good Lord immediately:)

redkneck
Very lucky indeed. When we get paged out to these old wood frame houses around here for fires, there's nothing to do but just contain the thing from starting other fires. The often quoted statistic is that in 7 minutes those old houses are fully involved in fire.
