Bowtech_archer07
Call a bird in for yourself or someone else? Last year I called in and killed a double beard for myself and it was awesome. However, the next day and in a later season, I called in several longbeards for my dad(who has never killed a longbeard) and it was an awesome thrill. I don't get to see my dad excited very often, but he was definitely excited to those longbeards. On one hunt, we had 3 longbeards, 4 or 5 hens and two jakes come out into a field. They strutted and paraded around at about 60 or 70 yards for probably 10-15 minutes. Dad was definitely getting very excited. Hopefully this year I can close the deal and get him his first longbeard. Soooo, would you rather call in a bird for yourself and kill it, or call one in for someone else, and why?
PotashRLS
Both are fun beyond words but calling for someone else has the edge, especially kids. Last year calling during the youth hunt was a blast. The kids are just amazed that the birds come a runnin just like on tv:D Priceless!!!! I called my Dad's first bird for him too and I will remember it forever. My brother was along hunting too but got cold. He ran back to the truck to drive home (6 miles) and get some more layers on. Once he left the birds started talking from across the field. I called a hen over the hill across the alfalfa toward us and behind her was a big ole white head, then another and another. 3 big ole Toms were hot on her heels. The hen wanted to crawl right in the spruce trees with us and got nervous with the Toms still 25 yards out. Dad had his pick of the three and my brother was all at the same time. He heard Dad shoot and saw the birds fly back. Insult to Injury:D Great times are had while chasing turkeys that is for sure!!!
WHISKEYSWAMP
I enjoy calling for other people and hope to get my dad to go with someday... he hasn't shown interest in turkey hunting yet. When I'm going after a bird for myself, I prefer to hunt alone... always seem to have better luck that way.
Guest TennesseeTurkey
I would rather call it in myself or call one in for someone else I wouldnt like someone calling for me
Squirrelhunter91
I've called in 2 gobblers for myself, 1 for my dad and 1 for a friend. Those are just the birds that we've killed. I had a friend call a jake in for me once, my first spring turkey. I've also called a few jakes in that we couldn't shoot, busted us or missed. Jorden
Well I've never done either so I have to say that I would like to do it for myself first:D...but if someone wanted me to call for them I wouldnt have any problem doing that either:)
Dakota
Well, I have never been able to find birds while spring turkey hunting (we were hunting in an area where there weren't many turkeys), but I've called turkeys in during the fall with just my mouth (no diaphram). I had stalked this group of hens on the edge of an overgrown soybean field and missed at thirty yards with my lil' NEF 20 ga. single-shot. They flew up into the trees that stood on the edge of the field leading down into a wooded ravine. After reloading, I slowly walked down into the ravine while making a few clucks and purrs with just my mouth. Immediately the hens starting calling back and forth from the treetops and dropped down to the forest floor below. Long story short...I missed a hen from a yard away! Rhino
Well I thoroughly enjoy trying to trick turkeys whether I'm doing the shooting or someone else I'm trying to call a bird in for does the shooting. I will say when calling for someone else there is definately a difference in my level of excitement if the shooter is a youth hunter as opposed to an adult. Now with all that said though calling one in for myself gets the edge over me doing it for a youth hunter. Why? It's real simple...when I'm calling one in for myself, as the bird comes into view and it looks like he's going to give me a shot opportunity my heart starts beating real hard and my breathing pics up immensely. That's part of the extreme excitement level I go through when it's just me and the bird. I simply don't go though that intense of an emotional level of excitement when I'm calling a bird in for someone else.
Bowtech_archer07
I do Rhino. It didn't matter for me last year when I called those birds in for Dad. It was just as exciting trying to trick that bird into coming 15 yards closer.
MossySNPR
Time in the woods is time in the woods to me! Thats the place I would ALWAYS rather be, whether calling, shooting, or scouting.
Strut10
How about the ultimate rush??? Call in a pair (or more) and doubling with someone special?? Did that with my dad on his first gobbler.

Did that with my dad on his first gobbler. That would be awesome, and it might happen this year for me Strut. Dad and I both have 2 turkey permits and and they are both the same county and season. that would be absolutely awesome;)
rhine16
How about the ultimate rush??? Call in a pair (or more) and doubling with someone special?? Did that with my dad on his first gobbler. Did that with my uncle a few years back... Was absolutely awesome! I called them in, he took the first bird and I knocked the second one down half a second later.
Nut
For me I pretty much concentrate on just being a caller for my sons and a couple of friends. I only hunted 2 mornings last spring by myself.
WHISKEYSWAMP
How about the ultimate rush??? Call in a pair (or more) and doubling with someone special?? Did that with my dad on his first gobbler. Done that with a buddy of mine a few years ago in Florida on our first morning out... we had 6 birds come in. I shot one first and they stuck around long enough for him to shoot one. Then we spent the rest of the week chasing and couldn't get another bird within range. Rhino
How about the ultimate rush??? Call in a pair (or more) and doubling with someone special?? Did that with my dad on his first gobbler. Did that in Texas once Don and it was great. When you're on the road turkey hunting time is limited so there is no tomorrow so to speak. I usually don't even bother carrying a gun with me when I'm calling for someone else at home anymore. It's just part of my mentality that the hunt is the real trophy...not the bird. For that reason I'd just rather have my shooter take a bird and save the other bird(s) for another battle another day. There's been times when I could have but didn't. Once the guy I had with me asked...why didn't you shoot the other one. I told him why but by the look on his face he didn't get it. Now there was one occasion here at home, 11 years ago if memory serves when I tried to take a double with my son. It was his first gobbler kill. I think he was 11 at the time. 3 birds came in and when he finally dropped one I missed one of the others when they were high tailing it out of there. Covehnter
Nothing like smackin' beaks for yourself! Don't get me wrong, I love getting young and inexperienced folks in the woods and letting them witness the rush. I will always choose to take someone before I would hunt for myself, but when you call for someone your job is to get that bird in shotgun range, you're not the one taking the wind outta their sails. On the other hand, when you are finishing the job once they're in range it's still up to you to execute the mission and this is often when things get real!
