lil hunter
The 3 most popular chokes are full, modified, and improved cylinder, but there are tons of other. The full, constricts the barrel more than the modified or improved cylinger, which makes your pattern tighter. Your modified choke is right in the middle. Say with a full choke, all the shot will be within a 20 inch circle at 30 yards, with a modified, all the shot will be within about a 30 inch circle, rather than 20". Tehn improved cylinder is the most open, producing the largest pattern. Full or tighter chokes are common for turkey. The best for deer slugs in an improved cylinger, but the modified will do for slugs if thats your only option. It will work for turkey, but you won't be able to shoot very long distances. MadHuntinPastor
Re: Modified Choke Just to add a question....I hunt in a buck shot only county for deer. Would you shoot a full for deer to help get a little bit of distance?
lil hunter
Re: Modified Choke i would guess full, but I don't have any experience with buckshot. You'd be best off tryin a couple different chokes, and see which one patterns best. A box of shells, and a few posterboards, or pieces of cardboard is all you really need for that. AJ
Re: Modified Choke The chokes are the amount of constriction at the end of the barrel, that will determine how open or tight the pattern of the shot cloud are. The more the constriction the tighter the pattern (to a point). The shot will still spread but the distance the optimum pattern developes will change with the different choke. Remington has a good writeup on their web site on choke selection. The choke does not make a load more powerful. The pellets are still traveling the same speed no matter what choke you use, but there will be more pellets on target with a tighter choke, thus making it deadlier. Some may think why not use a full choke always, if more is better. This is sort of true. Since there are more pellets on target, the pattern is smaller in diameter. This makes it harder to hit the moving target. You have to determine the distance you will be shooting at your targets, and use the proper choke. MadHuntinPastor, I use a super full choke for buckshot in my 11-87 Super Mag. My buddy also uses his turkey choke for buckshot. It can extend the effective range of the patterns. You do have to be careful not to overchoke as you will start to blow the patterns.
