horst
got done with work about 3 this afternoon. Its beautifull outside, 50 degrees, snows about gone.I decide its to nice to go home so like a moron I head for the river 15 miles away and dont tell anyone where Im going. I stop at a farmers house ive met, ask him if I can go look for sheds behind his place and head for the timber. Its muddy but after being cooped up for a month it feels great to be back in the woods.I get to the far edge of his propert, about a mile from my truck, and theres a real steep drop off back there off the hillside. Its probably 150 ft from top to bottom but Ive walked it before without any trouble.i get on a deer trail that angles across the slope and start down. Before I know whats happening my foot slides in the mud, and it turns out the whole bank is a big sheet of ice underneath about an inch of mud.My legs fly out from under me, and down the hill i go on my back.I slid and rolled about 100 ft down this hillside when i finally stuck my arm out and caught a tree to stop myself, which was good except I was going fast enough my arm went numb as soon it hit the tree.So there Im lying in the mud, the winds knocked outta me and I cant feel my arm.Everything hurts and Im not even sure I can get back up without falling the next 50 ft on the ice and Im pretty sure I just busted my arm..my first thought was great, nobody knows where your at and you aint got a phone Finally I got up and started moving again, and the feeling returned to my arm.Other than throwing my back out and some bruises I came out of it ok I think. The lesson here, always tell someone where your gonna be, if id knocked myself out or busted a leg or worse nobody woulda found me for quite awhile. It scared the crap out of me but it happened so fast i dont remember most of the fall till i caught the tree. Alisha
Re: What a ride Oh my! You're lucky you didn't get hurt really bad! I've taken some pretty bad (and really embarrassing!) falls in the past but I was usually with someone or they at least knew the area I was going to be. Glad you're okay! Turkeygirl
Re: What a ride Whew, glad you are ok bud! You probably had the numb arm because blood supply may have been slowed/ stopped for a little bit or you had a nerve temporarily pinched like in your shoulder is one that can get pinched. Oh well, glad you are still here to post!
Orion_70
Re: What a ride Glad you're ok Horst!! To add to that, besides telling someone where you're going, always carry a fanny pack complete with knife, compass, and fire starting equipment. That could have been a long cold night...
