mathews4life
Scout and find out where they traveling. Find their bedding and feeding areas and try to set up on the their travel routes two and from the location. Lock on stands would probably be ur best bet bc you can get up into a tree w/o cutting all your cover out the way and most importantly hunt the wind and stay SCENT FREE!!!! Best way to learn about tree stand hunting is to get out their and do it and learn from your mistakes. good luck
maddhunter
Re: Treestand Hunting You will get alot of advice here!!!!! Don't set up to close to a trail, you will get busted and may not offer a good broad side shot. When you have your stand up clear shooting lanes but not too much as the deer will sometimes notice. I'm sure theres much more to come.
longislandhunter
Re: Treestand Hunting I use loc on stands and a climber. I usually set up the loc ons in several different locations where I hunt to provide me with location options depending on the wind, deer patterns, etc. I use my climber when I hunt on public land since you are not permitted to cut or trim trees on the public land, or I use the climber when I want to hunt a new area. The climber definately give you the advantage of being able to pick and move to another spot at a moments notice, however sometimes the trees in certain areas may not be conducive to using a climber. As with anything else in life, best way to to learn the skill is to get out there and practice it. Good Luck.
GWSmith
Re: Treestand Hunting I may be able to help you out here. Not that I am any kind of an expert. I do know someone who has been running a very successful outfitting business hunting coues deer in Old Mexico for awhile now. He may be able to help you out...I believe he goes by the name HuntSonora (Drummond) over at the Monster Muleys forums. I cant really give you advice on hunting the coues deer by treestand since all I have ever hunted is the Eastern Whitetail from a treestand...I'm sure the tactics are different in many ways. I would suggest though that you make sure that you have some kind of back cover behind you to help breakup your outline so the deer of any kind wont be able to pick you out so easily. Thats about the best I can do here...sorry not more help.
magnatecsteve
Re: Treestand Hunting Keep downwind, use the tree to hide you, be sure to get a quiet stand and one that is comfortable enough to keep you on stand for a long time, use a safety harness.. ScottyLuck
Re: Treestand Hunting Practice, practice, practice! Shooting from a treestand is a totally different animal than shooting from the ground. You need to learn the shot angles. The only way to prepare for that is to set up your stand and shoot at a 3D target. Not to mention, if you're not used to hunting from an elevated position it can be a little intimidating standing and moving on a small platform 20' up.
