Winter Kill

I don't think this winter was all that cold for northern NY. Only got to below minus -20 F for a couple of weeks, and only once down near -30 F. We had quite a bit of snow, but not as much as the last few years. (knock on wood).. March can be some of our heaviest snowstorms...we are supposed to get snow tonight also...

In 1970 when I lived in the Adirondacks there were hundreds of deer dead in different yards. The herds never recovered because they so badly damaged the feed in the yards. It was common to find aborted fawns that were dropped by the dying does too. I've never seen anything like it since. The stench was pretty bad. It was the combination of a large healthy herd and the worse winter anyone could remember.

Gee, that just breaks your heart doesn't it. :( I haven't heard much of deer fatalities in this area, but I know about 10 years ago there was a real bad blizzard in the West River portion of the state. The antelope had no where to go and hide and we lost a good portion of the SD pronghorn population. Thankfully due to several minor winters lately and a decrease in licenses sold for the first few years afterwards the population has EXPLODED! Goats everywhere! :D

Dakota :)
