3seasons
Well the season opener was a wash, we got a little over 5" of rain. I did manage to hear 5 Sunday morning. Went yesterday afternoon to another spot and got on 14 turkeys; 7 hens 5 jakes and 2 longbeards. I was able to call up 3 jakes and 4 hens to 20yds but the longbeards would not budge, there was a thicket between me and them. Ill be back this afternoon to see if I can connect with one. BTW, love the team name.....guess I did ok........lol
3seasons
Well I let my 870 bark yesterday afternoon on a very memorable bird:). It was an unreal hunt. Long story short he wound up behind me at about 70 yards and 2 hours of working him. Then he got into a fight with 7 jakes it was a sight to see. I cut at them and they all came running in to see who could get to the hen first. I shot him at 35 yds. He has a 9' beard and no spurs:mad: not a sign of one on either leg. That is the second one I've killed like that. Sorry he's not bigger and he defiantly does not live up to our team name;), but he was an awesome bird to hunt. mrswtnhunt
Well, season got off to a pretty good start. Went out yesterday afternoon pretty early. I was in a really great spot where I was well hidden. The crows and owls were going nuts and I started hearing a gobbler far off in the distance across our property line (which is a small river). I heard him fly across the river and he was now on our property. I started working the friction call pretty aggressively. He zig-zagged through the woods steadily getting closer. I worked him for over 45 minutes with the calling with him getting closer and closer. Where I was at was sort of a bottom land, due to it being so close to the river it was real wet with alot of water spread out. I forst got a glimpse of him when he flew over a pretty big stream. He was coming right toward me. I had a hen decoy set up about 15 yards away from me and he saw it. He was in full strut and gobbling like crazy. My heart was racing and I thought I was going to have a heart attack.......lol. He was about 65 yards away when he first stepped out of the brush. He sorta circled around and was coming up to my left. He strutted and gobbled at least every 10-15 feet. I was ready. I had my gun on my knee and was ready for him to step out from behind some piled up brush. Well he turned and didn't come up the path that I had hoped. I guestimated that the closest he got to me was 45-50 yards. A shot that I didn't feel comfortable with. He went up a hill away from me and then he circled around and started coming back down the hill. I was pumped and ready, although my left hand was about to fall off from sitting on my knee holding my shotgun but I was ready for him. Well, he ended up coming back down the same path he went up and followed that path all the way back into the woods. Well I went this morning to the same spot and heard a gobbler in about the same spot that I heard the last gobble last night. I thought, YEAH, it is him. He is coming back. I listened and heard him gobble about 3 times each one a little closer, then the next gobble was farther away. He was going the opposite direction. After another 2 gobbles, I heard a shotgun shot..........My heart was broke. I just knew that someone else got my bird. It was over an hour and then I heard a distant gobble but it kept going the other direction. I decided to head back to the house. Before I did go back, I had a notion to see what yardage the bird actually was. I walked it off and it was about 35 yards to the spot that the bird was closest to me. I am now kicking myself in the behind for not taking that shot. At that time, I just felt like it was too far. At least now I know how far it is and next time.........I'LL GET HIM!! I am going back out this afternoon to the same spot..............wish me luck!!! Catrina:D
