pointing_dogs_rule
Not much going on here. Located 4 groups in the usual places. One place has three nice toms that strut in the same place every morning. I will take out a "youth hunter" for Iowa's youth season to the place with three toms. Hopefully he will get his first bird ever. I will start hunting after the youth season. I have confirmed three places out west where I will hunt... South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska. May be a little much to hunt in a 8 day period. Good luck.....Clint.... you are probably in FLA. by now. Show us a great bird. the dog

Remember to take all necessary photos to get him entered in to the contest. good luck to all the dog Ok everyone I am in the truck making the long 14 hour trip back to Indiana and typing this on my phone. But not going back empty handed. We are ont the board. Killed a Osceola on Friday morning at 10:00. We staulked him down in a orange grove. The birds loved it in the orange tree rows. They get under the trees where it is cool. Plus the watering system is there. It was quit easy to stalk them with the way the rows were. I think he is a 3 year old. He had a 11 1/2" beard, wgt 19#s 8ozs, rt spur 1 1/8", lft spur 1". My phase 1 of the slam in oone year is complete. On to Texas easter weekend. I will post the picks tomorrow. Anyone else hunting yet?
pointing_dogs_rule
Clint, YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on a really nice southern bird. TuffnufOutdoors
Here is my hunting partner and life long friend with our first Osceolas from Florida ( I am on the right). It was an awesome hunt. Guess I have to register the first bird killed in the contest. Even though I think I will kill bigger when I get to hunt eastern grounds? http://www.realtree.com/img/508/Florida_Trip_031_Reduced.jpg
pointing_dogs_rule
Yep, first bird must be the one entered. If you were not here last year read the photo rules of the contest. In addition, members will need to post a minimum of FOUR photos. Required will be photos of: BEARD… with legible ruler or tape measure included to show actual length, SPURS… also with legible measurement, COMPLETED SUBMISSION FORMS, and lastly, a wide angle photo of the successful HUNTER with the entire bird. One of the four photos MUST include a legible view of your completed 2009 turkey tag. If your local regulations do not require a tag, then write the date of kill on paper and include that in at least one photo. There will be a photo submission thread for this. It will include these instructions for posting the pictures. Please remember……it is the contestant’s responsibility to post ALL required photos!! Entries with insufficient photos WILL NOT be scored. Once more, congrats on a nice bird good luck to all the dog

pointing_dogs_rule
Took out a youth hunter this past weekend: day 1 - birds landed 50 yards away and moved away. One tom walked by at 34 yards, however, the youth was not comfortable with a shot that far. day 2 - birds landed 40 yards behind us and across a creek. They moved away once more. day 3 - only heard gobbling in the morning day 3 night - wen to the place the bird was gobbling in the morning and set-up at 5 pm. First call and he gobbles 75 yards over the hill and in front of us. Second call he moves to the left. Third call he moves behind us. Fourth call he is directly behind us (on top of the ridge) and he is so close that I can hear him drumming. We are in a very bad position so we take a chance on re-locate down the hill. He then crests the hill right where we had been sitting. 30 yards away and he looks at the decoy for a moment. Something is not right (the turkey). I tell the youth to shoot, however, he is un-steady and passing on the shot. Well the turkey gets out of there. It was a great weekend and I had lots of fun. Also put on a youth turkey hunting seminar at my home. Attended by 18 youths. Our season started Monday. I have not been out yet. Will take Thursday off to hunt (63 - 68 degrees). Good luck to all the dog
pointing_dogs_rule
Just a quick update: Season opened in Iowa this past Monday. I got out Thursady night and had 5 hens inside my decoys (less then 10 yards), however, the tom was stuck at 34 yards. A little far for me to shoot with the bow. Sunday morning I had birds gobbling in every direction. It was not until 10 am that I finally saw a gobbler that walked by at 45 yards. Another showed up at 300 yards across the valley and two other 200 yards down the valley. None of these gobblers paid any attention to my two hens and jake decoy. A hen did come into 10 yards of me. If the object was to shoot hens... Then I'd be real good!!!!!! Sunday at noon I set my blind where one bird ahs been roosting. I went back at 4 pm to get into the blind and as I was walking south to the blind he was walking north to the blind area. I was a little to late. I could not make the blind before him so I choose to back out and play it safe. Overall it has been a FRUSTRATING 2 days in that the dominate birds are just ignoring my decoys and calls. I have tried various calls and different decoy set-ups. Hope things improve this week. good luck to all the dog
NiteRunner
PDR, Man that sucks! Hopefully you're right and it will improve later this week. I almost bagged one today for the opener! My nerves got to me or something I just couldn't get the shot cracked off. Sorry team. Would have been my first solo kill, as typically I hunt with my dad, but he had to work. Here's how it happened. Full story will be on my Blog though. I got up and it was blowing and rainy, total crap weather. Got to the woods and it was already getting light out, but it wasn't raining so that was good. I stepped into the woods and let out some yelps and got an immediate response! YES! Now I start scrambling! I put down the gun and pull up my mask and start looking for a good open spot as they ain't far and its too brushy where I'm at. I hook around and get my decoy out on a path and because of sap lines I had to pic a tree more in the open to sit by. OK All set. I call, they answer, yes they. 2 of them. They're hot after my mouth call. Gun is up, Red Dot on. I see'm. White heads a bobbing and coming in. Focus. Bad thing was they're coming thru the brush and not the path. They hung up in the brush at 25 yards. Paid no mind to my hen decoy. Here's where I lost it. I could have taken a shot, the few twigs shouldn't have hurt my pattern much, but I waited. PUTT PUTT! Darn, they new something was up. But not before they move to the left unto the path, but they were pushed back to 27 or so yards. Do I shoot? Dang it, they only stay there for a couple seconds. What made me hesitate a second longer was that now that they were in the open, I could clearly see that they weren't that big. Probably 7" beards, body was 18 pounds tops. All a guess of course. Either way I knew I blew it. I should have probably shot. But there was so many things running through my head, I was nervous plain and simple. It's pouring right now, but I may head back behind the house here in a little. If not I'll be hot after some birds tomorrow.

pointing_dogs_rule
Just pulled in from Wyoming and South Dakota. I got skunked. They killed three birds on the ranch (Wyoming) the week before and all the birds moved 1 mile away to another ranch. About 50 birds in all and a very beautiful sight. South Dakota... it was the first time and I learned I do not know how to hunt the big woods and hills. Very hard compared to Iowa. good luck to all the dog

TuffnufOutdoors
Thats they way team. Sorry I have not been on. Lots of travel. Congrats niterunner that is a fine bird don't second guess it's size. Awesome bird and score PDR congrats. Well my travels have been very positive. This has been a banner year for me. First was Florida which you all know I killed one there on the second hunt, then moved onto Texas. Second morning there get one gobbling about 200yards away. After about an hour of work out he pops from the scrub trees and cactus,. Face full at 25 yards. 1" spurs, 19lbs, and 8 11/16" spurs. (Phase 2 of the slam complete) Head out that same day in the eveneing and catch another with almost exact same stats going to roost. Done in Texas. Get back for the opener in Kentucky and have a mishap. Lots of birds come in to the decoys, lots of chasing. One real mature bird in strut about 10.5" beard. Another strutter with 6" beard chasing each other around. When I got the scope on the one I dropped him but must of lost focus on which one was which because the 6" bird was dead. Still a good hunt just don't like to lose focus like that. Got to hunt two days in Indiana but no action yet. Last week went to Missouri. Can I say WOW what a hunt. First morning hunting new property so got twisted around and set up later then I should. I was crawling on my belly into the field to get a jake decoy and hen set up with three birds gobbling in the woods behind me. It was maybe 5:40am. At 5:50am I hear a gobble out in the field I was covering. Big bird 300 yards away and he is COMING FAST. Gets to the jake and spins him on his stake three or four times in a circle. I cluck and he stops strutting and faces me at 15 yards. BAM hes down. Face full of six's. His stats were 24lbs 14ozs, 1" spurs and 10.25" beard. (Phase 3 of slam complete) Whats left? This weekend in Indiana then leave for phase 4 of the slam in Wyoming May 15th. Need to close the deal and will have got that slam I want in one year. I actually have killed the birds of the slam but would really like to do it in a year. Maybe just maybe we can win this thing. Looks like we could be in it at least.
