jesse8953
Is there a need for a gobbler shaker call? When do you use them?
Guest TennesseeTurkey
I had one once....waste of money...didnt even sound like a gobble..."supposedly" when a bird shuts up you can use it to make him fire off as well but it dosent work...not for me anyway... toddyboman
yes they work.....I have had some success with one.... As any call it has it time and place... I believe Rhino used one last year to call in a weary gobbler. I wouldn't recommend using one on public land however
Rhino
I believe Rhino used one last year to call in a weary gobbler. Not just last year! Most seasons at least one bird falls victim to my gobble call. Maybe that's because I won't hesitate to use one when all else fails. It's great for hung up birds. One year I killed a bird using a gobble call when 2 birds traveling together wouldn't think of coming my way using hen talk. They came right in to my gobble tube on the 4th setup. I killed the lead bird at 20 steps. A week later I was backing up a friend of mine during an early afternoon hunt. I was sitting about 15 yards behind him. We watched a strutting old bird for almost an hour before I broke out my gobble call. I guess that old bird figured some competition was coming in so he broke loose and came right in. That's why I broke my gobble call out anyway. My buddy missed the bird at 28 steps. Just like any call it has it's time and place. Nothing works all the time though. I wouldn't use one hunting public ground though. The only gobble tube call I use is the Primos Gobbler. It reproduces a good gobble as long as the temperature isn't cold. I use my hand (slowly closing it) to muffle the gobble sound toward the end of the gobble sequence to try to reproduce that lowering of the tone and volume of a birds typical gobble. When it's cold my gobble call just doesn't sound right so that's one handicap when considering using one. BTW...last time I hunted south Texas my buddy and I called in 2 gobblers that had 3 hens with them using a gobble call. They wouldn't do anything but gobble at our hen talk. When we broke out the gobble call all the birds (hens too) came in on a string.

Rhino
I dug these pics out from that Texas set. Since I wasn't the shooter I had my camera in my lap while I was working my gobble call. I snapped this pciture of the bigger bird he picked out taking a dirt nap with the hens to his left. The 2nd gobbler ran around to our left to about the 20 yard line and stopped. I could have raised my gun and killed him rather than take his picture but I opted to wait for another opportunity to have another fun hunt rather than cheat myself out of a hunt. We both went home with our limit anyway.
MossySNPR
I've never had a reason to believe they didn't work. Last season a friend and me were sitting in a blind in a small clearing when a tom, 2-3 jakes and 3-6 hens made their ways out from the right. I'm sitting on the right and didn't have my side of the blind zipped down far enough, so my friend has a perfect shot and I can only see them out of my side window. We had 2 hens and an aggresive jake decoy out, before you know it, the turkeys walked straight back into the woods, so we blew it! I used the gun barrel to zip down the window almost fully and in desperation, I asked for his gobbler tube, I immediately starting cutting and shaking the gobbler tube and the turkeys lit up inside the woods, double and triple hammering. After about a minute, a hen showed her beak, followed by the tom and 2 jakes. BOOM double header. I ended up with a jake and he shot a the 5 year old tom. slughunter
I use one a lot and have had nothing but good results. Works really good to get a quiet gobbler to fire up. -shane
Rhino
I had another instance 2 years ago when it was obvious to me that the gobble call was going to be the call to use. Here's how that hunt unfolded. A friend of mine had called in a group of gobblers and killed one about 30 minutes after flydown time. About 15 minutes later he called me on the radio and told me he had killed a nice bird. He also said when he shot the sky filled up with gobblers flying out in every direction. Must have been a dozen more birds were his words. Also one of those gobblers had just cranked up again so he asked me if I wanted to come try to hunt him. Dumb question for a passionate turkey hunter that hadn't heard sqat yet that morning. Well I belined it to where he was in my cart and made it there just in time to hear a bird gobble. As I moved into a spot to work him, or any one of the others that were in the area I heard him gobble again. Figuring the gobbling bird was gobbling to regroup with his buddies I broke out the gobble call and gobbled every few minutes. It didn't take too long before I saw a red head moving through the timber toward me. He ended up being the first bird of my 3 bird bag limit that year here in MS. NiteRunner
Yes it works! Been using one for a few years now, it gets them going. Typically my dad using it and I yelp and cutt back to it, sounds a little more realistic this way. Good Luck!
Dakota
Uuh...I'll let you know as soon as I get back from Scheels today...picking up...something else...NOT a gobbler shaker call or anything like that... I had one at one point (Quaker Boy) but the reed/latex/thingymabob broke. Dakota
Guest TennesseeTurkey
I may reconsider taking one with me this year.....Ill either have to find my other one or buy a new one....
Bowtech_archer07
I've had mild success with one. Like todd said, every call call has it's time and place to be used.
layin on the smackdown
my buddy and i used one last year...the birds were starting to get quiet a few minutes after hitting the ground so we brought it out with us the next day...it worked like a charm...it may not sound exactly like a gobble, but some hens don't sound exaclty like a hen...same with geese...heck it the same with people:D needless to say, it will be coming out again this year;)

I had one at one point (Quaker Boy) but the reed/latex/thingymabob broke. Dakota Dakota, Call QuakerBoy Game calls and buy another insert for the shaker for atround 3-4 bucks. QuakerBoy is one of the only companies that the laytex insert can be changed/replaced. These calls will act the same as Mouth calls if they are left out in the heat/light. They really should be stored away in a cool dark place... I carry one with me all the time
turkaholic
gobble tube I use a Red Wolf gobble tube it seems to be the best for me. It has a place in my vest and has saved many of hunts. You just need to have a little faith in it. Try it when you have tried everything else and someday it will work for you. It also is a great locator call. When they clam up, a gobble tube will make them gobble and you can reposition on them and try to call them up again. I keep mine in a cardboard tube and it stays quiet in my vest. PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I have always been fearful of using one most places where I hunt as there are too many guys around that I just do not trust.
