Watch what you say in class

Oh man...I can only imagine what is going to happen when my son Joe gets to college next year.

So much for higher education.

CT, where they used state pension money to invest in Colt, for the good return; and then they went and banned the good citizens of CT from owning AR15's:confused:

What is this country coming to?

My my, how things change! I went to Paul Smith's College of Forestry and we kept our guns in our rooms in the dorm. There was an unsupervised 22 range in the basement of the gym too. What has happened since then? Except that a lot of politically motivated jerks:rolleyes: have been stirring the pot and ruining our country. It wasn't too apparent then but it sure is now!

I had a professor my junior year who said hunting was bad, and guns and people who used them were all just dumb rednecks. I can't repeat what I told him in class, but I was sure glad when the semester was over. Oh this same professor said anyone who believed in God was simple minded and wasting their lives. I heard from Jenn that he is no longer teaching at SOSU because he nutted out in class and starting barking at his students like a dog one day...............

The professor was wrong, but I can see how it happens. Fear can cause people to do a lot of things.

I'd be pretty worried if students were allowed to have guns in the classroom and I have no doubt that students would be getting A's that didn't deserve them.

Kind of got to side with Frank on this. I do believe that the professor in this case was in the wrong, however it is tough to read a story and know all the details. Possible this kid seemed a threat to the professor, we do not know anymore than what the story reads. Sure the student had a good topic, one that is no doubt very relevant and a topic that by all means should be discussed/debated, but if the professor did nothing and this kid turned out to be a nut who went on a rampage she would have been hung. Tough situation for professors/teachers in today's world.

According to the article, there were 3 students who gave opinions about teachers AND students being armed. While armed students could present a problem, what is most disturbing is the fact that the professor, the one who encouraged a current media issue to be discussed in class. Was discussed. He found it revolting to the point where he felt they were threats. It was said that professors and students could have stopped the carnage, not just students.

There goes the gun registration issue also with the police looking up the fact that a student owned firearms and questioned him about them.

Vhere are your PAYYYY-PERS!

What did they do wrong to be violated like that? The class assignment?

So make students afraid to discuss certain issues and start lets the intimidation of the thought process.

Higher education my foot.

Fear can cause people to do a lot of things.
The VA Tech assassin had no fear because he knew that no one would be armed in his twisted thinking. The killers at Columbine had no fear because they were armed to the teeth and knew that there would be little if any resistance.

I could not imagine what could have been said in a classroom assignment to invoke such fear in a professor to have her run to the authorities. What could have possibly scared her so much?

Fear is what the unarmed students and teachers felt as the cowards took advantage of their helplessness..

If I remember correctly the murders in the cases presented killed themselves. I doubt that armed students/teachers would have caused them any fear. Possibly a change of plans, but why would they be scared of being shot when that was their plan all along?

I doubt the student said anything that warrented the professors actions and I agree there have been times that I would have felt a lot better with a gun ready if I needed it. I've heard students say things like: "I paid $$$ for this class and I'm going to pass it one way or another."

However, if I get to carry so would the students.

The shootings in academic institutions are tragic and I wish I knew of a way to prevent them. However, in my opinion allowing guns in the classroom would be inviting more fuel to the fire.

...or providing a means to quench the fire before there are 30 dead kids/professors. Who would carry a gun into class under a rule allowing it? The only difference is that a few decent kids might. The looney will do whatever he is going to do regardless of rules. You previously mentioned that the shooters took their own lives, so the threat of death is no deterrent...but the thought of dying without making a grandiose, bloody statement might cause a looney to try a different venue than a campus.

I don't see how the good guys loose, except that college kids can be idiots and a drunk buddy that finds a kid's 9mm in his apartment/dorm room is a liability. I had guns all through college (don't tell my liberal arts college, they may take me off their alumni roster) and nobody got shot, but man we made some converts to the pro-shooting side those years!

(I kinda miss that old Dan Wesson .357 revolver. Remember the ones where you could buy different length barrels and screw out the "choke tube" thing in the barrel and swap barrels out??)

I am glad to get your perspective as a Lawman/prosecutor on this issue.

This professor did nothing but exercise "guilty until proven innocent." I won't say it is fear either. I will say it is being uneducated in more than what is right in front of her. A typical liberal trait. Control freaks by nature. They see it, don't agree with it, and instead of thinking things through and working on a smart solution to the problem, they cry foul and hide behind "fear." The only thing they should be afraid of is people like us who will hand them their for not thinking things through and thoroughly educating themselves on the issue at hand. Which, to the best of my knowledge, is what professors are supposed to do and teach others to do.
