Hunting is it passion or lust

Recommended Posts

Our desire to hunt or fish can it become lust, idol worship or a strong hold of addiction. How have you struggled with this?
I'm always leery of a first time poster who poses a question with a possible tone of judgement and intent to attack, but yet gives none of their own feelings on the matter. My apologies if that's not you, but why don't you share your thoughts on the matter? No offense but I've seen this WAAAY to many times on forums.

Personally I feel there is no correlation whatsoever between "lust", idol worship and hunting. Three different subjects. Now I could see possibly discussing hunting as well as any hobby becoming an obsession/idol that takes priority over God and family. Same for TV, stamp collecting or eating.

Just wanted to start a topic not a debate, I have been down to many trails to ever be in judgment or attack anyone. This is part of my testimony.

Two very important people in my life, my Father & my Pastor gave me the same bit of wisdom, at different times in my life. “Put the same passion that you give into hunting & fishing into your family also.”

But, I chased many passions, business success & causes, I fell, totally failed and lost my family. That led me in to a life style of addiction then into criminal behavior.

The Lord reaching out in love to my confession of sin & rebellion. He forgave me and set me on a path of recovery & restoration. For ten years, I never went hunting, could not because of probation. Then started bow hunting, I enjoy it, but it is not a passion, obsession or addiction. I have been able to share archery with my wife & grandchildren as a family.

Welcome to the RT forums!

A couple times I'd say I've been guilty of placing hunting too high on the priority list. I went hunting on the last day of the 07 season when my wife was ill. She didn't feel that bad when I left to go hunting, but she got worse by nightfall. I probably should have stayed home, but ended up placing an arrow through a 171 incher that evening. I was elated and that night my attention was on recovering the buck the next morning instead of caring for my wife.

When it comes to placing hunting over God, well since I incorporate God into hunting I don't see my passion/obsession for hunting getting in the way. I feel my relationship with God grows as I'm out in the woods. During those hours on stand I pray, and just talk to God about the things that are stressing me. Whether I get a deer or not doesn't matter that much becasue I come home feeling at peace and relaxed.

I've always kept my hunting in perspective.

As long as it's not negatively affecting your relationships, I don't see anything wrong with participating in it a lot if it brings you joy. IMO God wants you to enjoy your life, so do things that bring you joy. You need balance though.

First off, Welcome!

Anything, hunting, fishing, watching TV, enjoying Nascar, even our own families, can take the place of God. When this happens, no matter what it is, its wrong. Can hunting become a stronghold of addiction? You bet it can! Can family cause us to obcess and replace God in order of importance to us as individuals? You bet it can. Exactly why we need to keep everything in proper perspective.
