IowaDeerHunter
What would you guys recomend for a .223 rifle for coyote hunting? Something around $500. Still debating on what kind of gun I want to get and whether or not to spend the money on a AR. So just throwing around some ideas.
hammerforged
Take a look at the Tikka T3 in .223. While it is a little more than the $500.00 you mentioned it is not much more. I saw them at Sportsmans Warehouse for $619.00 about 2 weeks back.
IowaDeerHunter
I have had my eye on the Tikka, seems like a great gun. Thanks for the thought hammer!
wtnhunt
Think I would probably opt for a savage model 10 if I was trying to keep the price down. You can get a remington model 700 under $500, would probably be another consideration. The tikka t3 is a rifle I have been kind of checking into, really like their laminated stainless. This place http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=90821 has some decent prices.
Gator
I have a stevens 110, it is the same as a savage model 10, minus the accutrigger and detachable magazine. Other than that, it is a SHOOTER. Think I paid around $350 for it.
Adjam5
Get an AR while you still can. You won't regret it. If you don't want to spend the dough, the Savage and Tikka are also great choices.
muzzy1
I have a ruger mini 14 ,good gun kills the yoties and fun to shoot
IowaDeerHunter
Well I went to scheels today and checked out some guns. Looks like I would have to spend about $650 to get one I liked......so I might as well spend the extra $300 now and get the AR. Thanks for the input guys. doubleA
AR's are dandy varmint guns, though all are above your budget. A CZ 527 is a nice light weight rifle that is put together well and is light enough to carry as a walking varminter. Another choice would be a Stevens M200, they are no frill Savages but have a good reputation as a decent rifle. Though I am not big on Remington's imported Mauser based 799's, they have been going for less that $400.
bluelund79
You won't regret buying any of the above named firearms, but for fun along with varmit whacking, you can't beat an AR platform rifle. Save the extra dough and get one while they are still available, i know I love mine!
IowaDeerHunter
Ok I am getting an AR. Going to be Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit rifle topped with a 6-18x50 scope! Sound sweet? Just need to make sure I have a job this summer before I put the order in.
dbHunterNY
I'd get one just because they look cool. I mean many hunters don't have something that extreme.
IowaDeerHunter
Ya they do look cool. I am not a gun collector and will probably only own four guns, handgun, shotgun, muzzy, and a rifle. Since the rifle will never be used for big game hunting I want a yote AR-15. Figured I should probably get it now before they POSSIBLY get banned.
Adjam5
Welcome in advance to the Evil Black rifle club...Muhaaaaaa:D. A purchase you will not regret;) Look here too for great info www.ar15.com Don't forget to pick up a few mags too, 20's 30's. I don't know about Iowa, but in NY we cannot hunt with a semi that holds more than 5 rounds. So that might be a purchase you will want to add. The gun might come with one though. A few links for 5 rounders. I have MWG mags $13 ea. http://www.mwgco.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=MWG/PROD/AR-15_MAGAZINES/MWG-223-005 http://www.galatiinternational.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GIO&Product_Code=BW1553 http://www.centerfiresystems.com/promagar-155rdpartmagar-pm01.aspx Get 'em while you still can! Doc
I just bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223, and the groups are phenomenal. It cost right around your $500 target also. Doc Edited March 13, 2009 by Doc

Adjam5
The camo is mossyoak breakup:( Hey don't use that kind of language around here...this is a Family board:D. Just kidding:p. Yup AR's are back ordered 6-9 months. There are a few stripped on Gunbroker.com that are in the 2-300 range. You could save some money and build your own. The Remington SPS in .223 has a great rep and is a tack driver also. Just a matter of what you want.

jesse8953
What is there a difference between a sps and a varmint sps?
wtnhunt
What is there a difference between a sps and a varmint sps? Barrel and stock. The varmint is an upgraded sps, has a heavy barrel and the stock has venting and some other "ergonomic improvements".
IowaDeerHunter
Just put my order in for a Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit Rifle. Be here (hopefully) in a bout 24 weeks! Can not wait. Now where is a good place to stock up on .223 ammo. Or at least get an order in?

Adjam5
If you have been following Washington as of late:rolleyes:, there was a push to stop ALL of the spent cases from military ammo to be sold to USA ammo manufacturers. The current Admin wanted ALL cases to be destroyed and sold as scrap to CHINA! Which would have further depleted the ammo availability here in the US. That has been reversed, due to the fact that the military made $ from the sale of these cases and it would have created a larger hole for the military to dig out of financially. I'm sure this delayed the sale of new production .223 and .308 cases for manufacturers to get ammo on the shelves. .223 is about .40 per case if not more. Now where is a good place to stock up on .223 ammo. Or at least get an order in? Might go ahead and pick up some ammo if you can find it. Cabelas has been backordering .223 ammo, and in most cases they will eventually get it in. Last order I placed took a while, but I did get my ammo. Wal mart here carries a 200 round bulk box of federal .223 in I believe 52 or 55 grain soft points, they were $77 last time I was in there, but he cannot keep it on the shelf. My best groups believe it or not have come from the ultramax ammo with my rock river. Have gotten pretty good groups with the 55 grain sp ultramax loads. The black hills stuff in 55 grain soft point shoots decent out of my gun, not quite as good as the ultramax though. Have tried a few others, but been stocking up on the ultramax.
