okiedog
I'am in the market for a new rifle. I think I'am going to retire my 270 and move up a notch or two. The gun I'am looking for will be used 80% for whitetail, but needs to be very capable for Elk and possible trips to Canada. I know what works well for hunting in Oklahoma, but wanting to see what people are using for ELK and the larger Canadian deer without completly destroying my small Okie deer:D
Gator
Have you looked at .308 or 7mm Mag?
PotashRLS
Big fan of my Ruger M77 SS 7mm Rem Mag (Ammo variety is plentiful) and my Browning Abolt Hunter 300 WSM. Both are recoil manageable and good hunting rifles. Should handle most any game. Do you plan to reload or buy factory?

Strut10
The good old reliable .300 Win Mag wil fill every need you have mentioned ease and style.
doubleA
Absolutely nothing wrong with the 270 Win._____ elk and Canadian deer are not bullet proof. But if you are trying to find an excuse in getting another shooting iron there are a host of others such as the 30-06, 270 WSM, 7mm WSM, 300 WSM, 325 WSM, 7mm Rem, 300 Win , 300 WBY just to name a few. wtnhunt
Maybe a .30-06. Think that would be one of my narrowed down choices for any North American big game. Other considerations would be 300 win mag and 7 mm rem mag.
okiedog
300 win mag and 7 mm rem mag. I seem to be favoring these 2 calibers. I need to look up some ballistics and compare the two and try to find someone I know that has them so I might be able to put a few rounds through them. WaCoyote
7mm Rem mag, or 300 Win Mag. IMO either one would be perfect.

mailmanmark
New caliber As Double A pointed out there is nothing wrong with the .270 win. I read an article not too long ago, and in the article the author had stated " ...the only caliber that has dropped more Elk than a .338 win is the .270 win....." with that being said........... if your looking to buy a new gun......you are right on with the .300 win mag. With good hand loads it will stomp the piss out of a 7mm mag for flatness and energy. Goog luck in your decision.
WaCoyote
" ...the only caliber that has dropped more Elk than a .338 win is the .270 win....." I simply don't believe that. At all. Maybe a 30-06 but not 270. 7mm is very common for elk hunting out west. Of course people use many many different calibers but the 7mm and 300winny are far and away the most common. 338 mag really isn't too common. People do hunt with 270's, 30-06, etc etc. But you'd be hard pressed to find any elk camp where a 7mm or a 300 winny isn't present. WaCoyote
mailmans post got me thinking so I'm running a poll on our local Washington state site about the most popular elk cartridge. This will be interesting. I'll post up the results occasionally.
WaCoyote
Actually here's the link if you want to watch it yourselves. I think it'll be interesting for folks who don't live in "elk" states. http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,22639.msg260528.html#msg260528

Strut10
If it's narrowed down to a 7 Rem Mag and the 300 Win Mag it's a no-brainer IMHO. Both burn lots of powder, make lots of noise, shoot flat and kick a little. But the .300 Win is the clear horsepower winner at all reasonable hunting distances. Slider
I would have to agree!!! Get either a 7mm mag or a 300 mag. Short mag, long mag it really doesn't matter. You should be able to purchase 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag ammo anywhere!!! I personally have a 264 win mag and a 7mm rem mag. I have harvested 10 Elk with the 264 win mag(all one shot kills) before I switched to Archery hunting. Dakota
My vote is for the .30-06, I shoot one in Win. Model 70. Here are a few pics, the one in the elk pics is a Rem. 700 ADL .30-06 I borrowed on the hunt though I later bought my Winchester. Tink
John Nosler is 94 andn uses his 7MM Rem mag for everything elk he ises the 160 grain Nosler Now Federal Load the 160 grain nosler Accubond in a factory loading that duplicate his pet accurate load. barnes X Bullets are great too etc I think the new federal .338 would Be good for you large slug faster & flatter than a 30 06 and up there with 7 Mm mag Its an awesome cartridge with low recoil the 338 can handle heavier slugs. I killed everything in Africa plains game with a 7 MM Rem mag Only a poorly shot kudu at 315 yards needed a second shot I am 67 and Wont be being another rifle unles its a.416 rem mag TINK
