corndog20
today i went out and shot my bow with my parka and gloves on because it was cold and so i could get the feel of shooting with my hunting equipment on. Almost every shot was about 6 inches to the left. I figured out that the collar on my parka was interfering with the string and arrow. so i tried zipping it up all the way and it still moved my shot way left, and it screwed up my anchor point. I couldn't figure out a way to wear my coat so it wouldn't touch the string or arrow. Do you guys have any ideas on what to wear or have any comments about it? Rhino
Hard to say. Never had a problem with a coat's collar. I prefer laying my clothing rather than wearing a heavy parka. Doing that has never created a problem for me hitting where I'm aiming. That is with the exception of the string hitting my clothing. The cure for that was to wear an arm guard to compress the clothing on my arm there.
redkneck
Yeah, we just dont get parka weather down here. If it's that cold, you need to try to keep your clothes fitting somewhat tight for a bow. No trick i can think of, if it's bulky clothing and in your string's path, it's going to be a problem. Doc
Every year, I have to fight this problem when it comes time for heavy winter-time clothing. I have not actually traced it to clothing interference. It appears to be more a case of heavy clothing completely changing my form, i.e. muscle alignment and the ability to keep my head position the same as when shooting with light clothing on. All the bulk seems to impede comfortably reaching full draw, and forces some involuntary form compensation. There is also a feeling of having to reach out to get my eye behind the peep sight. And yes, about 6" (occasionally more) to the left is the result. At some point through every season, I have to make an adjustment in my sights to compensate. I really haven't come up with a better solution. And it's not any particular piece of winter gear that's worse than another. Even layering with over-sized sized clothing does not take away that feeling of draw and arm constriction. So needless to say, I am following this thread very closely. GWSmith
You said the collar was interferring with the string and arrow. Sounds like it's a fairly bulky collar! I'll throw out a few questions that come to mind: Do you have to wear that parka? Have you tried folding your collar underneath instead of wearing it on the outside(just on your anchor point side)? Have you tried wearing a large t-shirt over your parka? Have you tried opening up your stance towards the target?
corndog20
i guess i wouldn't have to wear the parka, i just thought i would try shooting with it on. and i could try tucking it in or rolling it under or something. i probably won't wear a t-shirt over it. i don't think i have one big enough. and i never thought about opening my stance up. maybe that will work. thanks
The_Kat
I always try shooting with my hunting gear at least once before season for this very reason. Nothing worse than finding that out after ya just missed your deer. I think what is happening is you have an extra inch or two of material on you.....therefore angling your release point outward an extra two inches or so, which in turn, would make you shoot left. It makes sense to me.....:D:D:D
wtnhunt
so i tried zipping it up all the way and it still moved my shot way left, and it screwed up my anchor point. I couldn't figure out a way to wear my coat so it wouldn't touch the string or arrow. Practice with and without and try to see if you can pinpoint exactly what is throwing off your anchor point. I wear a parka here when it is cool enough, but it does not get in the way of my anchor. Could be you are doing something different that you are unaware of as a result of the heavier clothing. Does not take much of a change in your anchor to throw off your poi.
Illinois59
Or you could purchase a Warmbag and never have to worry about bulking up again. Check out our website. www.thewarmbag.com
mike13candace
Good answer... my son pre-ordered the warm bag..
Flintlock1776
No issues like that with me. For a late season heavy jacket I have used an arm guard on the outside sleeve to keep the material from bunching up and perhaps touching my string. Tom2008
1st deer I ever shot I didn't where something to tighten my light coat against my arm. Well the string ran along my sleeve. Through my arrow off of where I was aiming (right behind the shoulder) and hit her right under the head in the neck. Yes she went down right away and died within 5 seconds, but not a shot I would ever take. I'll always wear a Team Realtree arm guard while hunting. Sorry I missed this the first time I responded... Change your grip...you change Everything;) Yes...even with light "Jersey Style" gloves theres a difference when you still have the factory grip on the bow. kansasbucks
I had this problem with my Browning quad parka. The fix was velcro. I put velcro on the bottom of the colar and on the coat so that it would lay flat against the coat. No more contact and toasty warm.
