The intention was, because of the floating panels on all 4 sides of the chest (what the kids faces are on), I wanted to make sure it acclimated to the humidity of our upstairs bedroom in the winter. That way if there was any shrinkage in the panels (which there was a little), it would not reveal bare wood, or an unfinished area. Since the time of the year the humidity is at its lowest is the winter, with the heat on... that is when the panels were contracted the smallest, revealing the most bare wood.
