elnor
I'm thinking about critter ammo options for pistols and revolvers and am considering CCI shotshells for my Springfield XD 40S&W pistol as one option. I realize this won't have the pellet count or energy of 410 shells out of a Judge, but it's a whole lot cheaper since I already have the XD. Does anyone have experiences, good or bad, using CCI shotshells in a semiauto pistol? How well does the ammo perform on snakes? Is it stout enough for armadillos at close range (say ten feet)? Any cycling issues? Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences!
bluelund79
Haven't tried those on animals as I currently live in the "city limits", but I have had cycling issues out of my XD40 service model, mostly fail to ejects... I wouldn't waste the cash, a hollow point will do snakes and armidillos just fine....
doubleA
They are very lethal on snakes, rats and mice at close ranges say 3-8ft. I wouldnt reccomend using them on anything else due to the pellet count and shot size are simply to small for an effective shot (density /energy) at anything bigger or further away. Stick with what they are intended for and you will be fine. They will not cycle most autoloaders due to lack of recoil. I use CCI's .22lr, 38/357, 40 S&W and 44 magnum and 45 acp with great success on snakes. As a handloader, I roll my own 357 and 44 mag shot loads with Speer capsules. elnor
Thanks for the responses, I think I'll just steer clear of them, then.
WaCoyote
I've used them for years in my .44 for grouse on the trails and they work pretty good. I've wondered if they would cycle a semi but just couldn't see how they would.
elnor
I actually decided to go the revolver route and try some of the CCI shotshells in a new 44.
hungry hunter
What Double A said, good on rats and snakes. close and personal. I use the .357 alot.
RangerClay
The .22 rat shot (as we call them) would not cycle through S&W semi auto. They were nice for shooting pigeons the barn without poking holes in the roof.
