Casey
Besides the total hunt, what do you like long beards or long spurs?? I am a big spur fan!!
Rhino
Both and birds with extra beards & spurs are even better. I lean more toward being spur fanatic though.

doubleA
I have always kept the beards and tossed the spurs and fans. For me, it's actually meat, the breast make terrific jerky.
Dakota
Nothin' like a thick rope struttin' down the gun barrel! Beard for me! Dakota
Squirrelhunter91
I like a big set of hooks. It's a true indicator of a mature bird and a trophy. I mean don't get me wrong, a big beard is great to watch but a nice set over 1" is real nice.

twowetdogz
I'm more of total package kind of guy myself. Love watching that beard when they're comin' in, but then always check the spurs first thing.
elnor
It's kinda hard to make them out in the woods sometimes, but I'm really looking for hooks that'll do this: Something along the lines of these:
Leo
To me that "perfect" monster would have a beard at least 10 3/4", spurs at least 1 3/8" and weigh over 21 lbs. Over the years I've taken birds that meet at least one of those criteria but not one that has met all three. So I know the area is capable of producing a bird like that. It just hasn't all come together yet. A nice two year old might sprout a 10" beard. His spurs might not be an inch long. A beard over 10 1/2" usually means the bird will have at least 1" spurs. But my biggest spurred bird, that had 1 3/8" hooks only sported a 9 1/2" beard. Yes the beard was damaged (strongly suspect by another hunter) but still that is what it was. Bottom line when I have one with at least 9" swinging in front of him, I pull the trigger whether I see the spurs or not! This year while we were scouting we spotted one giant and watched him through binoculars for a long time. He's got at least a 10" beard which is extremely thick but we can also CLEARLY see his spurs even through binoculars at 80 yards away. These spurs are scaring the 1 1/2" mark and I'm not kidding. His beard is really really nice and paintbrush thick but those spurs are simply fabulous. He definitely makes "perfect" monster status! I'm trying for him again Wednesday. Wish me luck, this one has been around awhile. He won't be easy.
snapper
I like long hooks...however, once I see the beard and decide its a mature bird...usally don't see the spurs until he's on the ground. Not very often I wait to see the spurs if I already seen its a "shooter".
The Kid
spurs usually will tell me how old the bird is,, when you call in an older wiser bird its something special!!
