okiedog
Well, I had a friend of mine bring over his 300 Win Mag this weekend so I could put a few rounds through it and see what I thought of it. I guess I got myself worked up over it because the kick was nothing like I expected.. Now I have to have one! Anyways, we had a few rifles laid out on the shooting bench and I got the bright idea to start checking speeds of different calibers with the chrono. Nedless to say I set it up a little too close the the muzzle for the 300... It completely destroyed my chrono:eek:. The housing split in half and circuit boards went flying, it was quit the sight to see. Now I'am looking for two things today.. I new rifle and a new chrono:rolleyes::D
okiedog
Well, just left the gun shop. The gun I am wanting doesn't start shipping until the end of the month, and I'am waiting on a call back to see if there is going to be a price increase with the new 09 models:). elnor
Another thing not to do: Shoot a Do-All Traps hi-caliber target that says its rated up to .30-06 with a 300WSM or Win Mag. Don't ask how I know that's a bad idea...
Shaun_300
LMAO! Sorry, but that's funny. :D Yeah the muzzle blast is quite extreme off the big guns! When I shoot my .300 WSM it'll blow leaves and crap around within a 8 foot radius of the end of the barrel. :D
doubleA
How close were you from the chrono? I have shot 1000's of rounds with more gun than a 300 win over a chrono and never had a problem. I'll have my screens set 10-12 ft away from the muzzle.
doubleA
Another thing not to do: Shoot a Do-All Traps hi-caliber target that says its rated up to .30-06 with a 300WSM or Win Mag. Don't ask how I know that's a bad idea... AR 400 and AR500 are the best steel alloys to use for metal targets. They are very hard and bullets will desinagrate when hitting them and the chances of richochets are minimal. Bullets actually have a tendency to bounce and richochet off of mild or softer steel. Here's an example of two targets shot with a 250gr Sierra Match King fired from a 338 Lapua at the distance of 400 yards. The round target on the left shows only bullet splashes, it's 1/2" AR 400 plate while the retangular target on the right is 1/2" A36 steel plate. As you can see, there is a nice clean 5/8" diameter hole in it from the 338 round, and this is from being shot at 400 yards. I dont like to shoot steel with high powered rifle rounds and less than 200 yards from a safety standpoint, but that's just me. For the 50 BMG it's 500 yards. Tink
338 Lupa is a good sniper round Might be overkill on some game
