That is the only way to do a real turkey tail IMO. It only takes me about a 1/2 hour and the results are awesome. I know one thing. My brother is thinking about going into taxidermy and the last two birds he's got, he did tail fan, beard, and spur mounts. I wish I had a pic of them to post. They both look pretty cool. On one he took a piece of suede and wrapped around the base of the fan and used leather laces (used for re-lacing baseball gloves) to "sew" both sides together. On the other he mounted the fan on a small piece of wood and then used another piece to cover the fan base. He put both of them on a piece of old barn wood. He glued the beards of each into an empty shotgun shell and put it on the board too. I think both look very good for a kid who just graduated high school.
