PotashRLS
I have limited experience here in WI. I am in a similar boat as you. Look forward to the replies too.
jonnyr7
so you've tried your hand at coyote hunting over there in WI?
PotashRLS
Yes, a little. Not called one in yet, though. We have a lot of dog hunters that run the yotes. Makes it hard to call.

jonnyr7
have you seen any that were out of range or anything? are you from grand forks?
bowhuntMN
both sides of my family are from the grand forks area but i live in the duluth area. in the future i definately see myself moving to grand forks tho. but when ive gone coyote hunting out there ive never seen anything. if a coyote did come in you'd most likely see it coming from over half a mile since its so open out there. bowhuntMN
ive been coyote hunting plenty of times with no luck. i usually go with my dad in the East Grand Forks area i usually hunt around our place in duluth and only make it out to grand forks maybe once a year. thats why i havent seen anything when hunting in the grand forks area because i only get to hunt out there every once in a while. just trying to clear up any confusion. if any of that even made any sense
jonnyr7
well don't feel bad. i've gone hunting so many times it's ridiculous that i havent had any luck. i went in Cambridge, Fargo, around my place in the north metro, and i haven't seen anything. i've called a lot, called a little, used every combination of calls i can imagine and i haven't seen a damn thing. i'm really starting to get frustrated. i think i'm gonna try the Cambridge area tomorrow. has anyone reading this ever heard about coyote hunting in the rain? is it a good idea? bad? what is the best weather conditions for hunting in the daylight hours? bowhuntMN
just yesterday our school was cancelled so i grabbed the gun and the call and hit the woods. school was cancelled due to freezing rain and ice. when i was calling, however, it wasnt raining at all. nothing came into the calls but thats nothing new so i guess i really have no idea for hunting during the rain but my guess for good conditions would be clear conditions because the sound of the call would carry farther. thats just a guess tho
jonnyr7
ya, i know what you mean. i've called in the rain(yesterday), on the clear days, and everything in between and havent seen anything so i really have nothing to compare anything to. i found a deer shed today though on my way in from hunting. that was pretty cool. it was my first shed ever
bowhuntMN
thats sweet! ive never gone looking for sheds. we hunt on my uncles farm in Thief River Falls so i'd like to try shed hunting there but its around 4 1/2 hrs away from where we live so i dont get to go there as much as i'd like

jonnyr7
ya i hear em howling almost every night. i am using mouth calls. i use the Primos Lil Dog, and the Johnny Stewart rabbit distress call. i don't have the money for a stinkin 400 dollar foxpro. wish i did
92xj
if you are hearing them howl at night, get out there 45 minutes before dark and howl, at first kinda quite but get louder and louder til one howls back, if nothing howls back I would not sit there wasting my time in that set. I have switched over from using distress calls to only howls and if I can not get one to howl back or come in on me within 20 minutes, they are not going to come in. Howling seems to be the trick for where I am. Also I have watched all of Randy Anderson's DVDs. He does a lot of howling. If you have not seen his videos, go pick one up, there is a lot of good tips throughout the video. The biggest thing is, dont waste your time in one place for too long. If you have been at a set for 45 minutes and have been howling and using distress calls and they have not come in yet, there not going to come in. Move around a lot and try new and different things. The best thing I have found is to lay in the middle of a field with a wood line around 150 yards in front of me with some sort of bottom to it. This seems to be the best set up for me. Anyhow, go get a video and watch Randy Anderson and get out there and keep trying. Move move move and learn all the different howls.
jonnyr7
i actually have 2 Randy Anderson DVD's and let me tell you, i have watched them carefully and scrutinized them for every little scrap of information i could get from them. i have tried starting with 2 short challenge howls, then waiting 5 minutes, then going to some longer howls, like a male howl, sometimes i answer that with a high pitched female howl, then another male howl. i have tried a lot of stuff. how far away do you think your sets have to be from each other to be affective? what kind of howls do you do? long ones that go up and down in pitch or what? what is your favorite call(brand)? oh, and the 2 dvd's i have are "the truth calling all coyotes"(must be the first one), and "the truth calling all coyotes 5". 92xj
When I move sets, I will move from a half a mile away to sometimes 5 miles. Whatever you think will be enough distance to find new yotes that could not hear the first set. I use the Hot Dog, KiYi, little dog and the Raspy Coaxer.... http://www.cabelas.com/hprod-1/0013582.shtml i will start with a Invitation howl, then after a while go to a female interrogation or a challenge howl. The videos will show how and what they sound like, or go to youtube and search sounds for coyotes. anyhow hope all this is helping
jonnyr7
i only have a lil' dog and a Johnny Stewart rabbit in distress. what do you think would be the next best one to get? i'm thinking maybe the hot dog because maybe the lil dog isnt loud enough, maybe they're not even hearing me i guess.
92xj
I would get the Hot Dog and KiYi and you should be set.... those are really the only two I take with me 95% of the time
jonnyr7
so you start off with the hot dog? do u think the problem may have been they didnt hear me?
92xj
so you start off with the hot dog? do u think the problem may have been they didnt hear me? possibly, But start off not as loud as you can incase they are close to you, you dont want to sound too loud. If you do a normal sound call and get no responses, increase the volume until you get a response. If you do get as loud as you can and do not hear or see anything within 20-30 minutes move on. jonnyr7
have you ever had a take a while to get a response? have you ever had them come in without ever hearing them howl? is that ki-yi more of a howler or distress call?
92xj
The longest I have had them take was 45 minutes if they were in the area. I have had them come in without howling back, but hunting on open fields I would see for a long ways and could watch them come in if they were not talking back. the Ki Yi is both, depending on where you place the rubber band and what you want it to sound like. I use it for both the same amount.
jonnyr7
well i broke down today and bought a electrinic call. i got a Johnny Stewart call, it has a remote. it was only like 35 bucks, so i guess u get what you pay for but ithink it will serve its purpose. do u ever use electronic calls? what are your thoughts on those?
