So frustrated...

I killed my first ever/ONLY fox squirrel on the opening day of squirrel season in October 2007. I was so proud of it that I decided that I would get it mounted, so I dropped it off to my taxidermist on October 9th, 2007. I paid a $100.00 deposit and was told it would be finished in 4 - 5 months. On the opening day of rifle season, my dad killed a nice 8 point buck in which he got mounted at the same place and was told it would be close to a year before it was finished. Well, 9 months later (August '08), we get a call saying that the deer was mounted. I went and picked up the deer and asked about my squirrel.... he said it would be done in a few weeks. I call back in December asking about the squirrel and he says that the guy who was helping him had quit, that he had been super busy and it will be done in a few weeks. So here it is close to the end of March '09 and STILL no squirrel.

I feel like I have been more than patient with this guy. It seems as though he is taking the big $$$ projects over mine, which is totally unfair. It says on my receipt that deposits are non-refundable but I'm seriously debating going there next week and demanding my money and squirrel back. I'm under the impression that he either attempted mounting it and screwed it up, has no intention of mounting it at all, or just taking advantage of me for being a woman.

What would you do if you were in my situation? Should I get my Dad to go over there with me one day and give this guy a talking to or what?

Also, after being in the freezer for a year and a half, would it even be worth mounting anymore?  :(

That just flat out sucks...i would agree with hoosier and ask for it back...chances are, he probably lost it, or messed it up and is waiting for another one to mount. The turn around for a squirrel should not even be close to that long.

I would definitely get Dad and go see whats up...or have Dad make a phone call.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

I would do something about it ASAP. IMO if in August he said it would be a few weeks and you let it pass until Decemeber when again he said it would be a few weeks and you let it pass all the way to March now, he is probably just going to let it keep going and going until you actually do something. I would go pay him a visit and not leave until you have your money and squirrel.

That’s poor business management right there. He should mount the animals in the order that he receives them. The fact that your dads deer came back before your squirrel proves it. Unfortunately, the chance you'll get your money back is probably pretty slim. And if there is no refunds on deposits, than I’m guessing you signed a contract or something?....hopefully he does the right thing though.

If you don’t mind me asking...what was the total cost of this mount going to be?

DWL - I took it to Nature's Way Taxidermy. The guy does great work, but he has lost my business along with my Dad's. If I'm able to get my squirrel and money back I'll check into the place you suggested.

Kels - The total cost of the mount is $259.00 which is not cheap by any means. It was to be mounted climbing up a piece of driftwood, looking to the side with a hickory nut in it's mouth. (The nut was still in the squirrels mouth after I shot him and when I dropped it off to the taxidermist.)

Thanks everyone for replying... I'll be paying him a visit this week.
