mossyhorn
My last post made me want to ask...For those of you that keep a defence gun in your bedroom, how do you keep it stored? I don't like keeping guns outside out the case wihout a lock on them. But if someone breaks in I would have to go past both door to my house and through the living room to get to my guns. By that time I would be hurt or worse. As of right now an un-drywall spot inside masterbath closet is hiding a 12ga. Not loaded but the shells are near by. I don't have kids yet so it will do for now. But I am afraid to keep it there when we do have kids. I know I could lock it but that would take time to unlock and then load it. Anyone got any tips for the future?
OJR
I keep all my guns in a safe, unloaded! If someone breaks in, they can have whatever they want. If they want to kill me or my wife, so be it! I just live don't live in constant fear!
GWSmith
If they want to kill me or my wife, so be it! Are You Serious?????? Personally my Wife and I do not have any children living here. So when we are home I have at least one weapon very easily accessible and loaded...I will defend my wife and myself. When we leave I unload and lockup every weapon and they are stored properly. I do not pity the fool that attempts to harm my Wife or Myself. I will inform them of thier impending loss of blood from many high speed projectiles should they continue. I will have given them plenty of chances to change thier mind. If they decide not to turn around and leave quickly on their feet..I figure that they made a decision to end thier life and they will leave in a body bag. I truely hope that nobody is that stupid or suicidal to attempt a home invasion here.
hungry hunter
No kids in the home, My wife keeps a LOADED 20 ga on her side of the bed and I keep a LOADED .45 (HYDRO SHOCKS) within reach of me. No I don't live in fear but all outside of the 20 acres belongs to the state of Florida inside belongs to me. When My kids were at home They were taught Gun safety at all times and knew the location of all firearms. I am pretty proud of them they never bothered them. Why have an UNLOADED firearm for home protection and you have to run and get it:rolleyes:
wtnhunt
We have 3 kids(oldest 13 to youngest 3), they are growing up learning gun safety and respect for firearms. Best to teach them as early as possible. We keep everything with the exception of my ruger locked up, it is in my reach from the bed, clip is out, but the loaded clip is also where I can get to it in reach if need be. NS whitetail
All firearms here are locked and the ammunition is stored seperate. Not once have I have ever thought about or even worried about a home invasion. ( not saying it can't happen though ). In my 41 years, I have never heard of a home invasion with someone home around here and only a very few break and enters.

texastrophies
I taught my son how to shoot my Colt and the last couple of times out, at 14 years old, he has actually outshot me, so, I keep it, loaded, on his bedside table so he can protect me. Calm down, I am just kidding. Maybe....
PotashRLS
My Firearms are kept locked in two gun cabinets inside my little "man closet":o. I keep a Ruger 9mm in my underwear/sock drawer underneath my underwear:eek:. It is not loaded but the 3 mags sitting with it are. I am going to move it now that our 3 year old is exploring more. I want to get one of those false-faced clocks from the Sportsmens Guide. The front face of the clock hinges and inside hides your handgun. Adjam5
I have 2 shotguns readily accessible at all times in the house. One in our master bedroom(nothing in the chambers) and another above the coat closet door(inside) laying on a shelf. My sons are 17,15 and 12 and have been brought up around guns. Kids don't play in my home anymore, and if my young nephews come over everything is secured and possible hazards are removed. Including the knife block on the kitchen counter. I think children should be educated in firearm safety and the big mystery removed. That does not mean you can be careless with guns around the home by any means. All of the other guns are in the safe. Only James Bond and I are getting in there.
JJL
We all know the basic rules of gun safety. A loaded gun that is not in your hand or on your hip is an accident waiting to happen. All it takes is one unknowing person to get their hands on it and it's over. Here's the real question................WHERE IN THE **** DO YOU LIVE ??? Why would you live in an area that would cause you to live in fear, to the extent that you feel the need to put others at great risk in order to "feel safe" ?? If the criminal activity has escalated to the level that requires you to keep a LOADED GUN IN THE HOUSE...............it might be the time to relocate. I'm sure that if crime is that bad, there are enough other reasons that life is not what it should be where you are living and it is probably time to go. Don't try giving me the excuse that work, family or home keeps you there...................B.S....... Nothing is worth living in that much fear. I've got a 90lb. American Bulldog that does an incredible job of keeping my family and I safe at night. She's also a invaluable part of the Family. Think about it................. Adjam5
I like dogs, but I don't like dogs in my house. I definitely do not like cleaning up dog crap or its smell and I cannot afford the extra expenses of feeding/vet bills for a dog. Nor do we have the space for one. It is not even a question of criminal activity in my area that has me concerned. It is the level of humanity that does. Last year, one town over; a father and son dragged another father out of his home at the door, and beat him with a baseball bat over one kid scratching the other kids Xbox cd disc game. Imagine that...That has nothing to do with where you live. It is how some people act now a days. Both were apprehended and prosecuted. Not all of us live in a town with a population of 3000 or even 30,000. My sons high school graduating class has just about 1000 students in it. With close to 3500 in just grades 10,11 & 12!. There are just about 400,000 in the county alone. We are by no means a small community. I have an alarm system that we use when we go out and we have never been robbed from or violated in any way. I have been to quite a few Texas homes in the last year or so, and more than a few have had rifles standing up at just about every doorway. Those towns do not have the amount of people in their whole town as I have on my road alone. Do they not live in a safe area? And no...not all of them were ranches that needed rifles at the ready for livestock protection. I asked about the guns at the ready. I was told " what I am I supposed to do when I need it? Go get it or have it ready when I need it?" Hmmm, I thought about it. I do not advocate loaded guns laying around either, the racking of the slide of a .20ga or .12 for that matter is quite intimidating when that noise is heard. But if ammo is not near or at least in the mag...what good is it? Chemicals under the kitchen sink propose more of a hazard for children than a defensive firearm. I do not view the people on this forum, who have posted to this thread as irresponsible types. If anything I think they would have gone above and beyond to make sure incidents do not occur with unguarded guns around the home. I do not live in fear of a fire, but I have a fire extinguishers in key areas around the house also.
RangerClay
I refuse to be a victim!!! Plain and simple! Crime can happen at anytime anywhere. How many people die just because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't believe that anyone chooses to live in a bad neighborhood. I live out in the country just like many of you, but @#$% happens. What if some crackheads crash their car in front of your house in the middle of the night and they want in your house? I don't live in fear but I am prepared for the worst. At best if I dial 911 I can have the troopers at my house in 20 minutes. That is more than enough time for a criminal to do whatever he wants. I have two weapons staged in my house out of the reach of my children. God help the poor ******* that breaks into my house. He will die. GWSmith
What is the next step here "Why bother having guns in the home...since your not willing to use them"? BS This is MY CASTLE...try to hurt my family in my home and you die:mad: Criminals entering my home can consider the bullet a deterrent. Seems some people misinterpret being prepared for having fear. I do not want to kill anyone...I am however prepared to stop someone if they have made the decision to harm any member of my family. That is not fear...that is a promise. jm23494
I would rather be proactive than reactive in this day and age. There are too many wackos out there that can and will do anything. I keep 6 shots of 00 buck shells in the side saddle of my tactical shotgun that is locked in the gun cabinet with a trigger lock on the gun. The key for the cabinet and that particular gun are stored together on separate rings tied together so that they are readily accessible if anything was to happen. If anyone tries to get into the house they first have to contend with 2 black labs that are very protective and if they make it past that I'm sure that they will be running shortly. layin on the smackdown
I also have two dogs in the house...one is my black lab, and the other is the womans german shephard chow mix...Her dog is about ready to start pushing up daisy's, and i am willing to bet my lab would lick the first person that broke into my house...and anyone after that...I have never seen him get aggressive, and i honestly do not think he has that "attack" gene in him (although i could be wrong)...For that reason i keep a 12 ga, uncased, in the closet with several rounds of BBB in a close but hidden location... Reasons...hmmm.. 1.) i live next to a somewhat busy highway that, last year, a serial killer drove down and killed several random people in Rock falls IL...and was caught in somewhere down by St. Louis...bottom line he could have stopped here. 2.) i live on a corner of a somewhat busy highway on the edge of a small small town... 3.) no kids 4.) if some crook is going to try and harm anything or anyone in my house, im not going to stand there and let it happen.. i don't think the question here should be "why would you", but more like "why the heck wouldn't you?"... GWSmith
i don't think the question here should be "why would you", but more like "why the heck wouldn't you?"... Yes exactly... A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed. At what point does that mean let a criminal come into my house and do harm???

Will a good place for long guns to be left alone where kids can't get at them is inside a closet above the door. No one looks there. They always look into the closet, not above the door inside the closet. Either on a shelf or hang it on those coated hooks and let it lay on the hooks supporting it. A shelf will block any view upward and only you will know it is there.

HCO Team
I was brought up that having loaded guns in the house was like milk in the frig. My Dad was the Chief of Police and we had to have loaded guns because in a split second, he needed to be prepared. (Many stories involved.) My kids have been brought up to respect a firearm. It is not a toy and the use of one is always deliberate, whether it be practice shooting, protection etc. I was never afraid of my children getting into my "stash" but I was afraid of their friends. So we did keep them hidden and secured, in hopes, easily accessible for those "just in case" moments. I have a .357 6 inch revolver that is packaged with snake shot, .38 special and finished off with .357 loads. Then my Dad's .38 Special Detective series is very close to me... Many reasons for this. #1. I am living in a house that has been vandalized previously, (before I had taken possession) and possibly was used as a drug house. This will be the Lodge in the future. Word gets around in a small town. #2. Since the property had been abandoned for 3 years, there are many critters roaming around the place. Education is the key. Curiosity will get the better of children. Educate them, responsible handling of a firearm and have them learn the respect of a firearm and make it not a forbidden fruit. mossyhorn
Why would you live in an area that would cause you to live in fear, to the extent that you feel the need to put others at great risk in order to "feel safe" ?? JJL I am not saying where I live is a bad place. But Eastern Kentucky has a very large population of pill heads. In my area the people are nice and everyone works hard to make a living but all you have to do is cross over the hill. Their you will find the drug dealers. Now I dont know of any houses being broke into. But I plan to protect my wife if somethings does happen. The plan is we lock ourselves in the bathroom with the gun. If they want to take something by all means let them but if they try to break down the door to the bathroom they die. I am not living in fear of those around me, I am only prepared if something should come up.
JJL
In 1983 I was living in Kewanee, Illinois while going to college. 10 p.m. one evening our back door was kicked in and three armed black men wearing ski masks held my brother, myself and two young ladies at gun point for 1 1/2 hours while they ransacked our apartment. Let's make a long story short..................... The 12 gauge in my closet did me NO good, oh.........it was there. I just couldn't get to it. If I had a 45 on my hip, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be writing this now. My point being, most crime is random. The biggest factor in becoming a victim is where you live. Our apartment was selected because they needed cash for drugs and thought college kids would have some...........I never said they were smart. They were later apprehended. Two were from Florida and one was local. That evening when the local authorities arrived, they were met at the door by a 12 gauge and had the nerve to ask if I had a FOID card.............I laughed in their faces. They were also Black. Tony
i keep a few loaded and in easy to get to places.. my 1911 Kimber 45 is loaded but no round in the chamber in a holster hanging in my closet. all my other guns are all unloaded and in cases. weapons are nothing but tools to be used for target practice, hunting and self defense. it makes no sense to have a weapon at home, that you claim you want to use as self defense and cant get quick access to it. let me also add that i do not have kids, so its easier for me to allow a loaded weapon in my apartment.
