Gun safety

Pistol in a holster up high and hidden. Mag is loaded, however, no round in the chamber-only wife and I know where it is, and mags get switched to keep spring tension. 12 ga short barrel 870 has no rounds in it, but 5 rds on the butt stock in a carrier-very easy to load and again, up high and out of sight. I have 2 boys, but the 4 yr old alrerady knows not to touch guns without daddy there, and if he sees one at a friends he knows to tell the parents or ask to call home so he can leave. Gun safety never starts too early.

WOW, what a lot of varied opinions everyone has, I got to stick my two cents in, hehee...

1) I dont think crime rates should affect your decision to keep a firearm handy. When i was 14, a friend of mine (girl) up in the boonies by two guys that just escaped from the county jail, her brother and cousin had just been killed with a shotgun.

2) I kept all my guns locked up when my two girls were smaller in my humble little man closet. I stressed to them the importance of guns, and potential dangers, just like you do the stove. They're nine now, and my guns havent been locked up since they were about 6 (unloaded of course). For protection I keep an automatic under the bed with a full mag, chamber empty. I'd rather have smart kids and no gun locks than ignorant kids with my guns in fort knox.

3) I never lock my doors except at night. I sleep hard. I put all my faith in my trusty weiner dog to wake me up as he patrols outside, and like Dan, I figure the lab will help lick them to death. If your the last house on a dead end road, they're either coming to visit or steal.:D

I keep my m&p 40in the case it came in with the two clips loaded with hornady tap ammo put up from out of reach of the kids but within quick distance to me from my bed.Someone breaks into my house I have no problem killing them, the questions will be ask after they are laying in my floor. My family is my life and I will do whatever it takes to keep them safe and protect them from harm, someone breaks in and tries to harm them and your story is always better than the dead mans.:D

My Lab and Rotty would buy some time if I needed...but I have one cocked-n-locked with one in the pipe close by the bed!

I'd rather go down "trying" to defend myself then go down "wishing" I could have defended myself.

BTW, I live in the woods with no neighbors...def. not a high crime area...but you never know.

Having a loaded gun for protection in your home is like having smoke alarms. Hope you don't need 'em...but damn glad you have 'em if you need 'em.

I live in a little town outside of Little Rock. Crime here is almost nil, but there is the occasional freaked out druggie. Last spring in another little town about 45 minutest away some drugged out illegals broke into a guys house and he happened to have an SKS loaded in his closet. The world is now short to illegals Mexicans.

Crap happens everywhere folks. Don't know if you heard of Anne Presley, the news anchor that was killed earlier this year, but she lived in a very nice, nearly crime free area of little rock. She was brutally raped and then bludgeoned to death in her own bedroom.

I keep a single shot 12 ga. in the closet with 00 buck just above it on the shelf. I've got a 22 pistol with 2 full clips in my sock drawer and a 38 loaded on a nail in the all closet. You can't see it and can't reach it unless your over 5' tall and there's no way to put a chair in their where you could get to it.

You never know what's going to happen. Being prepared is not living in fear. I don't live in fear of running out of gas just because I keep 1/4 or better in my truck.

I have a glock 23 loaded with one in the chamber in the nightstand in a blackhawk holster. My finance and myself are the only ones here and we live in a nice neighborhood with 7 officers in here, but that still doesn't mean something bad couldn't happen.....

About 7 months ago in my old apartment I was extremely close to almost being forced to use force. A man kicked in my nieghbors door at 5am. ( I never heard it) my finance woke up saying someone was screaming for help. I got up got the gun and went to the door. I saw a man walk out of the apartment limping badly. I went to go outside and Jenny freaked and wouldn't let me go because she was worried something would happen to me. I choose not to go outside. When the police knocked 20 minutes later and I answered with the gun in hand the policeman said it was a good thing I had that. I explained to him what I saw and he said had I went outside he was sure the man would have forced me to shoot him by attacking me.....

I bought the gun for self defense, but believe me I never thought I would be that close to having to use it....Scared the heck out of me because I know he wouldn't have walked away and that would be a life changing experience...

Also that man went around back of the apartment and busted out the bedroom window. My window is right next to that. What if that would have been mine?

Point being you just never know what is going to happen and where it might happen at......It's not about living in fear.... it's about being prepared to defend what I love........

I live with my parents (I am only 18) and I keep a .22 in my room right behind my door. You cannot see it unless the door is closed and you are in the room. There is never anyone in my room unless I am in there. We live in an area that very rarely has crime. There have been a few garage break ins lately and that is why I have it in my room. It probably won't kill anyone but it will scare someone or hurt them. The other guns we have are locked in a cabinet with shells no where near them, with the exception of my dads Ruger pistol. I have no clue where he keeps it other than its in his room somewhere.

I keep the majority of my guns locked up for safekeeping, having said that, I have others around the house, garage, bedroom that I can get to in a moments notice. Some stay on an empty cylinder, shotguns are ready to be racked, autos are ready to go.

I'd rather have it and never have to use it, than to need it and not have it.

It's all about training and respect for firearms instilled in people.

1 12ga right by the bed loaded with Turkey loads. 223 on the other side of the dresser, 40gr HP. 9mm in dresser locked and loaded. And I am willing to bet that almost every gun in my closet is locked and loaded. No kids in my house, I live alone. 2 dogs that act as early warning detection systems. I also live in a rural area, I am at the end of a dead end road.

12 Guage in a open faced gun case with 5 #6 bird shot hidden but within reaching distance...............40 cal S&W Sigma staged and ready with full clip..........none in chamber and has extra clip fully loaded.

I watched a show a while back where they showed using bird shot for defense because most of the shot will not penetrate sheet rock but will tear a human apart.

This is MY CASTLE...try to hurt my family in my home and you die:mad:

Criminals entering my home can consider the bullet a deterrent.

Seems some people misinterpret being prepared for having fear. I do not want to kill anyone...I am however prepared to stop someone if they have made the decision to harm any member of my family. That is not fear...that is a promise.

Ditto...I'm in complete agreement here. No children in my house either.

My Glock 22 (.40 SW) and my Model 29 S&W 41 Mag. stay loaded in the top drawer of the end table next to my bed.

Numerous loaded firearms staged in different areas of my residence. No children present, and if any do come with their parents to visit, I secure the firearms until they leave.

And I agree with the birdshot theory for indoors self defense. It's devastating to an intruder in the same room, but relatively harmless when shooting through walls. My Springfield Armory 12 ga riot gun is loaded with Remington Express #6's now.

in the early '80s, i had over 100 guns and 2 young girls. each gun was loaded and ready for use. my kids knew that, as did all of their friends. they also knew they'd get a licking if they even went into the room with them and none of them ever did. right now, each gun i have is loaded. i have a winchester defender 12 guage within easy reach of my bed and others where i may need them, and a silent house alarm. none of my guns can be reached by anyone under 5' tall.
