JimT
Hi everyone. I bought a Remington 710 for my girlfriend to hunt with. I know a couple guys who have one and they both shoot pretty good I thought. They like them anyways. However, after doing some research on them online it seems the vast majority do not think much of this rifle at all. Sloppy bolt, longevity issues etc. I am wondering now if I made a mistake. All things considered what would you do? Buy another rifle or just let her give this one a shot? Things to think about are this rifle will not get used much. Maybe a box of shells a year if that. Most shots on deer are well under 100 yards here in Maine, so long range accuracy is not a big concern. The gun is a youth model due to her smaller stature {5'4" 115 pounds}. There are not alot of choices in a youth gun. I got it for $279.00 new as a package at Cabelas. What are your thoughts??? Jim
jesse8953
I gor the stepson a 7mm mag in a 710.Does him just fine.He will not shoot it much, so for the money I could not beat it.Someday he can buy something nicer if he wants. doubleA
Sounds like a perfect match for her needs. It should do all that is asked.
wtnhunt
Has she shot it yet Jim? If so, how does she like it? I have not had any field experience with them, but I have heard that the 710's and 770's are functional. Far from being what you would expect from a remington 700, they are just not the same. If she likes it, I guess I might keep it since she will not be shooting a lot, however if there is a chance you might pick up the gun to shoot it or hunt with it you might consider getting something else. I rarely shoot my daughters A bolt micro hunter in .243, but I did use my wife's .243 some for varmint hunting and will still shoot it on occasion. My wife is small too, her .243 is a savage model 10 and is a very accurate gun.

Ditto, I know a few guys that have them and have no real complaints about them. Sure they're not the fanciest gun or highest quality you could get, but for the amount she uses and shoots it, it should do just fine for her. Adjam5
I think you did OK for a occasional use gun at a good price too. The main difference I know about that rifle is that the barrel is pinned and not threaded into the receiver. A friend has one in .270 and he kills deer with it just fine. She should kill with it just the same.
Rem308
I wouldn't worry about it. My good friend has a Remington 710 chambered in .30-06. We've shot it a good bit at the range, the design is quite different from the 700s, but it's still very functional. Yes, the bolt is sloppy compared to the 700 and others, but it does it's job. She will be fine with it, later down the road you may upgrade, but it's a fine gun for a few years. My friend's .30-06 is his backup gun, just in case while he's on a hunt he drops or messes up his primary. Let us know how it shoots, my friend's is very accurate. Arkansas Boy
bought my girlfriend the Rossi .243 youth combo for $200 and got what I paid for. It's a piece of crap. Single shot and it won't open if you shoot winchester ammo in it. Have to shoot Remington out of it. She had a misfire at a deer and we didn't think anything of it until my cousin called to see if we had had problems because they got one for his nephew and it had misfired six times and they sent it back to rossi. Also you can put it on a leadsled and still not get good groups at 100 yards. The gun is a joke. Very disappointed.
