Arthur vs Stick... Ouch!

My dog Arthur who is almost 15 years old decided to chew a stick to pieces.

Dogs will be dogs! Have fun Arthur. Destroy that stick!

Unfortunately, a piece of the stick got lodged in his gumline. A big piece. About 1/4" wide by 1/2" long. He couldn't get it out. I couldn't get it out. So after two days of trying. It's to the vet we go.

They had to anesthetize him to remove it. It was really stuck! $243 later he's got his pearly whites back again. Ouch! It would have killed him if it got infected. Not the surprise bill anyone needs. But yeah I'll pay it to keep him.

Still, he won't be chewing any more sticks if I catch him!

I believe it was Frank Zappa who coined the phrase................."Dead Puppies aren't much fun."

I had a Bassett who got a stick wedged in her mouth bad enough that it punctured the roof of her mouth and went into her sinuses. I pulled it out and gave her 5cc's of antibiotic. She still chewed on sticks, i guess she was alot more careful, cause it never happened again.

Arthur has some Basset in him! Maybe it's a Basset thing?

He's also part Rottweiler. Makes him look like a Lab in low gear. I guess someone left a footstool in their backyard at the wrong time. LOL!

He's a rescue pup from the shelter. He was probably a year old or older when I got him in 1995.

All kidding aside, I've had him a long long time. He's half blind from cataracts, has bad arthritis and a little senile. He survived cancer and an abscess on his tail (which cost him his tail). Funny to admire a dog for his will to survive, but I admire Arthur for this. He's my personal definition of super tough. I remind myself, in dog years he's over 90! He's repeatedly beaten the odds for survival and quite thoroughly at that. I'll sure be sad to see him go.
