bluelund79
Whatever is in my hands when I see one....When I actually persue them I take either of my 2 smaller caliber rifles DPMS Panther Carbine in 223(55gr Black Hills SP) or Tikka T3 Hunter in 25.06(117gr Hornady SST) and Remington 870 w/ Patternmaster LR tube and #4 Remington buckshot
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Don't know about the best, but my rock river varmint in .223wylde sure works well. Use 55 grain soft points.
Swestoh
I like the stevens .243 does i really nice job out to 300 yds.
jonnyr7
hey thanks a lot guys. i think the most common answer i get is probably the .223 and .243. i've recently started hunting north dakota in the valley, and as you know i think i could be in for some extremely long range shots. not only that but a lot of the farms i hunt here around home in Mn have some pretty descent visibility for long range stuff. i almost have my bow paid off and i think the next thing i'll be setting my sights on is a coyote rifle. thanks for the input and i welcome anyones opinions as well
92xj
I shoot a ruger 22-250, during the off season i practice shooting 500 yard shots at least 4 times a week. I also reload 40 grain moly v-max for it and have it dialed in to shoot 3 inch groups at 500 yards. This is my coyote gun and has not failed me yet. I dont know what kind of long distance shots you are thinking you are going to take, but the best thing you can do is practice. I would never ever ever take a shot over 300 yards if i didnt shoot my gun as much as I do. Anyhow, i like the 22-250 the best for yotes or the 220swift. My best friend and shooing buddy has a 220 swift and we shoot both guns a lot. We have them both dialed in for 500 yards shots and 3 inch groups, the 220 is a tick faster than my 250, but they both work great. So my opinion is the 22-250. good luck and practice!!!! jonnyr7
hey 92, how much does a set up like you have cost?
92xj
hey 92, how much does a set up like you have cost? my set up was around $1300 for gun, scope, and bipod. the 220 swift my buddy shoots was around $2000. What is your price range? let me look up a site for you.....
92xj
if you are looking to buy a gun, complete, check these guys out, for what you are getting the prices are pretty dang good....http://www.snipercentral.com/entrypackage.htm
jonnyr7
wow thats a lot of money. is it better to buy a gun with a scope already mounted, or buy the two seperately?
92xj
depends on if you can find a scope and rifle package that you like or not. there is def cheaper things out there, but with distance shooting you get what you pay for. With a normal 3x9 scope you are not going to be able to see and hit quarter size dots at 300 yards a farther. What is your main goal in the rifle you are looking to get? strictly coyote hunting at 250 yards and less or what??? and whats your budget? jonnyr7
well, i guess the majority of the shots i would take would probably be 250 yards or under, and lets say my budget is $500. you think you can get something worthwhile for that much? i really don't know much about scopes, but i know enough that i don't wanna skimp on one

Have a burris fullfield II on my AR and it works ok. If you wanted to hold out until you could spend a little more you might also consider using whatever you are hunting deer with, have used both a .270 and .243 and they will roll yotes. That's exactly what I bought a month or two ago, and it cost me $500. I understand that there are places where you can get it even cheaper. The thing is super-accurate too, right out of the box. I had a Bushnell Banner, 3x-9x variable that I put on it. Check it out! Doc

I would shoot with whatever your deer rifle is. I have killed them with my 270, 308, and 300wm. Yeah they are all over kill but they get the job done. With a budget of only $500 you will just be getting alright stuff. I would put that 500 bucks in the sock drawer and continue to save until you reach the 1000 mark. I have been doing a little research trying to find you some good deals and stuff.... I dont know if this guy has this gun anymore or who he even is, but you could find out through the website he posted, this is a pretty good deal on a nice gun and decent scope. http://longrangehunting.com/forums/f25/sale-ruger-target-model-m77-22-250-a-38188/ this is pretty much what I shoot, i have a little different set up but close enough in price for the rifle and scope combo. i have a ruger rifle and leupold scope...... http://www.gunsamerica.com/939778931/Guns/Rifles/Ruger-Rifles/1-Type/Ruger_22_250.htm# you can expect to pay just under 600 for a ruger. Anyhow, what is your gun of choice and scope of choice if you could get what you wanted? I will do a little research and see what kind of deals I can find for you. 92xj
wow, i just read through the whole thread on that first post. He let that gun go for 500bucks to your door. that was a smoking deal, I am sorry I did not find it faster for you, that would have been perfect for you

Man I have been looking around all weekend and cant really find anything good enough that I would get or would recommend to get. Is your budget still around the $500 mark? What are you taking out with you now when you hunt? Willing to not buy right now to save up a little more, or want to purchase something soon? money burning a hole in your pocket:D
jonnyr7
no i can hold off for a while to get a gun. right now i use a 30-30 when i hunt the fields, and a 12 gauge with #4 buckshot when i hunt in the woods
92xj
I would continue to use what you have for a little while and try and get around the $1000 mark for a good gun and scope.... i would do something like this for starting out and average range shooting....this gun.... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=125672846#PIC .....and this scope.... http://www.swfa.com/pc-3449-89-leupold-4-12x40-vx-i-riflescope.aspx those two would cost you right at 900 bucks shipped to your door. and will work great for you. I would feel confortable shooting that set up out to 500 yards if I shot it a lot and got the practice in....anyhow, hope this is helping. Also what is you gun brand of choice? as well as scope? so I can continue to look for something that you would really want and do some research with you. this is fun for me!!! jonnyr7
i guess i really dont have a preference to brands. i was kinda hoping you could steer me in the right direction. l like my Browning shotgun a lot i guess. and as far as optics i dont know much about them
92xj
my favorite are Browning and Ruger for Rifles, I have a 270 Abolt by browning and love it to death. I also have my 22-250 in a ruger. The ruger is a little bit cheaper than the browning abolt. Optics, for me there is only one, Leupold. They have every sice you can thing of an range from $150-$2500. jonnyr7
what would be good dimensions or whatever you call em for a scope(8x10 or whatever)? also why does it seem like everyone always gets bolt action rifles? are they more accurate? The optics all depend on the range you are shooting. For shots under 200 yards I would go with a 3-9x40 or 3-10x50. I presonally like the 6.5-20X50s or a little higher but i shoot 300 to 500 yards and like to be able to see at that range. the action of a rifle is all personal preference. I prefer the bolt action because that is what I have always shot and will continue to shoot.
