wtnhunt
Was talking with our wal mart sporting goods/gun counter manager and he told me his display on this exact same gun http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=125391391 in .30-06 was going to be discounted. I had considered buying one of these a few years back, but passed the deal up and the price went up a bit since. His display has a busted rear sight blade which is insignificant since the gun will be getting a scope on it. He said they would be discounting the price about $50 from the retail $518, however when he was showing me the rifle I noticed some light rust on the bolt. Being a polished bolt, guessing it is just light surface from handling and it should be easily enough removed, should I be concerned that it may have rust in the barrel? I mentioned to him about the rust, he said he is stuck with the gun. By the expression on his face I don't think he realized it had the rust prior to my pointing it out and I think there is a good chance I can make a lesser offer and the store might take it since they have had the gun so long. The barrel and action of the gun should be fine shouldn't they or should I take the rust as a sign to just pass up a deal?

bluelund79
Tracy hit it on the head, never hurts to ask. I wish our Wally World dealt so nicely with people at the gun counter...
wtnhunt
Walk in with $400 cash and see what he says. Kind of along the lines of what I was thinking Tracy. I wish our Wally World dealt so nicely with people at the gun counter... I usually make it a point to talk with the gun counter manager every time I get by there, he is a pretty good guy. doubleA
I have to agree with the others on making a low ball offer, all they can say is no, but it might save you a few bucks. The rust on the bolt is most likey from handling since you said it was polished. Having dealt with firearms all my life, they do have to be wiped down and oiled ocassionally if they are going to be handled alot, such as one on a gun counter. On another note on the newer SPS line I would say that 8 out of 10 blued rifles I have handled have rust on them from a factory box. The matte finish and bluing is horrible on them. Hoosierbuck
Yes sir, you can haggle with Wal-Mart. Once upon a time a local Wally world put a stainless Ruger .270 M77mkII on clearance for a ridiculously low price. I wrote an even lower number on the back of one of my business cards and asked the clerk to give this offer to her manager, and have him call me with a response. Later that day I walked out with that rifle for $320... HB
Adjam5
Have a good bore light? Bring it to the store and give the bbl a good look. Keep tight lipped and roll yer eyes... look away, and shake your head. Then, William... I'd say offer the $300, he'll say 4 and you say 350 sold! Hope you get it:). Natchez is running a good sale on optics now also:).
wtnhunt
No deal this time around. Guess we will plan for the wife to still be taking my .270 with her on her trip. Maybe I will run across something else in a .30 caliber. Basically what he said was so long as they keep the discount down to below $50 they do not have to out it in a report it to management, so they will not come off of it as much as I will give for right now. I will keep watching though, the gun is a 2005 model, been in the display case a long time. Seriously think they will discontinue these soon, he only sells 3 to 4 of them a year. Remington usually runs their rebates for rifles later on in the year anyways so I will just hold off.
