Another Rio goes down.........

I made my weekly jaunt to my place with the thoughts of getting some electrical work done in my shop. I arrived about 12:30 this afternoon and while driving down a ranch road I just happened to look to my right when crossing a cattle guard. LOw and behold there wer a fews hens and a gobbler 100 yards down the fenceline. They didnt seem to spook as I drove on. After I unloaded some food, clothing etc.

I said what the hay, I'll just throw on a my ghile and vest grab the nova and try to meet up with the group I saw coming in. I had 600 yards between them and myself with lots of cover. Though not needed I did have the wind in my favor. I finally got to within 250 yds or so of them and they were slowy feeding across a big open area towards me. The cover was getting sparse so I decided to hold up and wait them out. It wasnt but a few minutes and they were closing the distance. I thought I had a decent position but I think we all second guess ourselves at times and this was one of them. I was about to get up and move when suddenly I saw some heads pop up, oh shoot I am caught sorta in a kneeling/crouching position. It didnt take long and my foot is aching, I am wobbly trying to take some pressure off. The The hens are now 20 yards from me and dont seem to see the big blob.;) Not known to me, two gobblers flank me as I slowly turn my head to see their movement. I am now more or less surrounded by a bunch of eyes and cant make a move to save my life.

Only a few minutes go by and I am hurting, the 2 gobblers that flanked me finally started to move to my right and I decided to try for one of them when they went behind some cover. I didnt move but a pinch and I heard the dreaded P U T T. It was obvious that I didnt quite pull off my ninja like skills like I wanted to.:o It was just a heart beat and all I saw were turkeys going in every direction.

What do I do pfffffft? Quickly I managed to find a gobbler and put the crosshairs on his head and fired. He went down like a ton of bricks. I then lasered it to find it was 47 yards which is a little farther than I like to shoot, but in this instance the excitement got to me.

This was'nt exactly a text book hunt, I had my favorite diaphram in my mouth but never made a call. I didnt figure it would do any good with all the hens present, but sometimes being lucky and being in the right place works out with success.

I didnt weigh this bird but the beard went 10 1/2 inches and sported 1.25" and 1.30" spurs.
