Harvest tax on bucks over 150 inches?

Check out this guy's idea to help our deer herd in Illinois. Please tell me I'm nto the only one who thinks this a completely ridiculous idea.

This is a exerpt from the blog:

FROM Tim Totten of Chillicothe:

So what do we do about the problem? I’d recommend Illinois DNR implement a harvest tax on trophy bucks. Any buck delivered to a state taxidermist measuring over 150 inches is assessed $5.00 per inch tax for those hunting without the aid of an outfitter. This tax would be collected by the taxidermist upon delivery. Additionally, outfitters would be required to be trained on how to measure antlers as part of their license. Outfitters would collect the $5.00 per inch tax from their customers and be required to keep records of such, available for audit by the DNR. Failure to keep accurate records would result in the suspension of their license for 5 years. A portion of the harvest tax funds would go for the enforcement of this policy. The remainder would be used in conjunction with and under the guidelines of the Pittman-Robertson federal funds.

I posted a comment at PSO.

I think it's a great idea with a couple flaws!

I think it should be changed to 5 dollars a hair (why give the does in the heard a reason to scream discrimination). I also think the money should be collected by me, forms submitted by me, and the hairs counted by me.;)

I think it should be expanded to any Illinois hunter going out of state also. Any time an Illinois hunter shows up as a nonresident to hunt deer he pays $5 for every deer he looks at in that state. LOL

Seriously, that is the dumbest proposal I have ever read. What's next, a scouting tax. I think Mr. Totten needs to be kept out of public office. There are guys like that in every state, They need to be flushed out and defeated. Maybe a trophy tax on stupid ideas ? If your caught presenting a stupid idea like this, then you must pay the taxidermy bill for five deer mounts.

How dumb is this guy? Sounds like he wants everyone to use an outfitter. He must be an outfitter.

Should be just the opposite if he wants more big deer. Tax on bucks under 120 inches (just kiddin). Hope he stays in Illinois.

the dog

Hey dog, I just spoke with the guy, he's actually a resident of Iowa and running for governor of Iowa next election! Polls indicate he's a shoe in.:D

So I shoot a 150, take it to Indiana, have a taxidermist there mount it for me, drive it back to Illinois, hopefully passing this dude's house in the process, fly the bird, take it to my home and nobody's the wiser. :D

Politicians will find a way to pay for anything.

I would make the drive from Wisconsin just to to join you when you pass that guy's house. What an idiot.

Wow, talk about one heckuva dolt!:rolleyes: There is no way this gentleman is an outdoorsman, otherwise he'd be hurting himself. Or maybe he's a filthy rich trophy hunter who has the money to pay for such a ludicrus proposal and thinks every American is just like him!:(
