TBow
I've noticed a couple of threads (and also on someone's signature), that a few of you are on the verge of retirement purdy darn soon. Well, me too! I'm a "baby boomer" and started workin' for the canadian federal government back in the 70s with the coast guard, so I'm treadin' purdy dang close to my maximum retirement years, which is right around the corner. I figure I'll probably make an exit stage right (from work that is) this summer. I have to say that even though I have a few reservations about pullin' the plug, I'm also pretty excited about it. I don't have any disolusions about spending every waking moment hunting, fishing and golfing.....and well yes, maybe the odd barley sandwich, as I've been consolidating all of my "honey-do-projects" into one list for my pending departure. My grandfather used to tell me, "when you stop working and being productive, you die!". I always used to listen to him, so I'm gon'na try to keep myself busy, god willing. I've mostly been neglecting my fixer-upper projects on my home over the past 15 years or so, so I figure the next two years anyhow will be taken up resolving those issues. And as soon as that's completed, I own a building lot in the country that my wife and I (well me anyways) would love to move to, so I might have a new house project in the works in a couple years. Anyways, just 4 or 5 months left for me if all goes well until retirement. How many others are on the retiremant starting line just waiting for the starter gun to go off, and how much longer 'till that happens? Got any plans? Swamphunter
Its in my signature the amount of time I have left to cross the finish line. Just about 10 months left....no real plans but have my resume out there. It will be nice to have that option to go, but with todays economy, who knows. I may have to work until I am 70. TBow
Swamp, It was actually your signature regarding your time left to retirement that gave me the idea for this post. I've had two or three job offers already for when I retire, but I don't really want to work full time at anything. After all, this is called retirement...right? But I will admit, the extra ca$h would come in handy for items like, hunting property, fishing boat, new 4-wheeled drive pickup.....and oh ya, a few trips to the sunny south during the winter time for us poor frozen northerners! Right? Muff, I work occasionally on Wolfe Island currently and might just try to look you up or take in some of your Realtree get-to-gethers that I've noticed you had posted. After retirement, I'm hoping to take in some of these forum bashes that I read about. TBow
m gardner
I'm semi-retire already. I work 4 days a week and would like to work less but the owner of the shop I work at asked me to stay as long as possible. I come in late wednesday mornings because I shoot practical pistol tuesday nights and get unlimited time off to hunt. Pretty sweet deal. Sad though becuase all the young guys have been laid off. Only the good machinists that can program are still there. Mark

Adjam5
Oh boy, I cannot wait for that day to come when I get to officially hang up my tools. I have been doing electrical work for the last 23 years in NYC and I am planning on retiring to the Texas Hill country in about 11 years when I'm 55. I would say 35 years in ANY trade or business is just about enough, let alone construction. I will most likely take a hit(penalty) for retiring early at 55, they want us to work until we are 58 for a full pension(maybe I can tough it out). With the way our employment is here, I cannot wait to get out. Good Lord willing, I can retire at 55. So I have come to terms with this statement. I will find a way to live on less money, but I cannot live on less life. Do what you can, when you can. Life is short. Staying busy is important and sitting on a porch watching the grass grow is not my kind of retirement. I want to wish all of you that are close to retirement health and happiness. May all your plans come true.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Yep, I had set things up to "retire" at 55 (I'm 50 now), but with the stock market fiasco, it looks like my retirement age has now shifted to about 75.
stevebeilgard
i quit working last year this time, but i never really want to retire. i've always been self employed, and i enjoy my work (building) but now just go where i want, when i want. it looks like i have two homes to build this summer. one for my daughter and we'll also start our home in alaska. that one will take me 2-3 years before we spend any real time there. meanwhile, i'll haul a 5th wheel up there to live in. i read here where so many of you are looking to quit working, and i find that sad. since i love building homes, i've done hundreds of them and enjoyed my livelyhood. too bad my boss is such a jerk.... lol.
