Great story! Chalk it up to experience! I have a tough time estimating distance also... I guess that's something that comes with time in the field! :D Keep your head up! You'll get one! :D

Question! Has your hubby taught you how to hunt for these birds or are you self teaching yourself? I have wanted to go for years and would love to go this year but have nobody to show me the ropes. :(

LOL.:D Nah, I just told her when and where to go and where to watch, and told her to call lightly.;) Surprised that she actually listened to me for a change.:rolleyes::p:D

I heard that bird fly up to roost there earlier in the week and I could not get him to come to my calling up the hill where I was at. Heard the bird a couple mornings too, so figured he was hanging around. Unfortunately we have never gotten to go turkey hunting together.

Seeing as how she is on another team and sending me trash talk pm's, guess I am going to have to rethink giving her those helpful hints.:p:D

You think that was trash talkin........buddy, you aint seen nothing yet.

And yeah Alisha, my hubby has taught me so much about hunting. I have learned some things from watching shows on TV but mostly learned from hearing wtnhunt tell me about his experiences, what call he used, where he went, etc... As he said, we don't get to hunt together. Someone has to stay home with the kids, so we take turns. I have been hunting deer for many years now and there is not a whole lot of differences. It is mostly about being in the right place at the right time. Doing your scouting ahead of time to know where your target animal is going to be. The biggest difference in deer and turkey hunting to me is outsmarting their senses. Deer have an amazing sense of smell so scent control is essential. Turkey have amazing vision so camo is crucial and to avoid being spotted. I hunted on the ground at the base of a huge tree. Some people use a ground blind or some sort of cover. Really depends on your terrain that you are hunting.

Anyway, as far as not having someone "show you the ropes", just get out there and do it. To me the best way to learn is trial and error. If you are going on a morning hunt, go out at dusk the night before and just listen. You can hear where they are roosting. Then set up somewhere close to where you think they will head to after they fly down. Which is usually a food source. Good luck to you Alisha.
