Productive Walk

Thanks to Hoosier Hunter for the headsup, I decided to take a walk out behind school today to try my luck at our morel patch.

I froze my hands off in the cold rain, sleet and snow, but it was worth it.

First thing I found was the old shed antler, right next to it was a morel. After about a half hour of walking around picking up the mushrooms, I found another antler. I'm not quite sure if this is a matched set, I don't think it is. The older one was out there 2 years probably, while the other one looks like it was last year's shed. The older one is slightly bigger too. Tough to tell.

Thought about leaving the little guys, but didn't know if the freeze we will get tonight would ruin them, so I picked them. :D

Brought the mushrooms home, cleaned them up and called my buddy Ohiobucks to see if he wanted to share in the bounty. Unfortunately, he had other plans. :( Darn, guess I had to eat them all by myself. :D

Cut them in half, sautee'd them in some olive oil, garlic and onion. reduced them, added some KJ Chardonnay and some heavy cream, and Oh My Lord----good. Poured that over some garlic/sourcream mashed taters and chicken. Meal fit for a king.

Headed back out tomorrow with my buddy. His mom is in town, loves mushrooms, but has never had a morel. I'm on a mission.

:D

Great find, but where we live we fry them!! We cut them in half soak them in salt water overnight and rinse them several times to get out all of the dirt and bugs then we make a batter of milk, egg and flour, dip them and put them in a skillet of hot oil. Keep turning them until golden brown all over, about 3 min. each side. Drain on a paper towel, sprinkle a little salt and UMMMMM!!!!

It is a little later for us, our morel time is on tax day April 15!

Yep, have done them that way too, but, trust me, try them the way I described. Plus, if you soak them, it leaches out a lot of the woody flavor; which is cool if you don't like the strong "earthy" flavor.

Same here, usually we start finding morels, weather pending on about April 18th or so. Can't wait for them to start popping up here if the weather will straighten out. We didn't find many last year because we had a such a crappy spring.
