arrow32
Okay I'm wanting to quit chewing and I'm wondering how the heck you guys have quit smoking, rubbing whatever. I've been doing this crap since I was about 15 or 16 and am 18 now and I go through between 1 and 2 packs a day its just getting way to expensive with prices going up. I've even been rubbing some to keep costs down because its cheaper now.LOL Alot of people don't even know I do because when around alot of people I just rub and swallow the crap. But on a short note anyone who has quit got any tips?
craig mack
I quit smoking cold turkey. I smoked for several years and quitting was hard but some how I got through it. Its a mental thing, you have to really want to quit or it wont happen. Good luck

unioncountyslayer
What the heck is rubbing?
mossyhorn
I quit about 2 years ago for 3 months. It really is hard to quit. But you want to make sure you are doing for yourself because it will be harder if your hearts not in it. I quit because my wife asked me to but never could get into it 100% because I felt like it wasnt my decision. Cold turkey worked very well though. The hardest part is breaking the habbit. Find something to chew on like jerky chew, gum, or hard candy so that you have something to distract you from the urge. There is also some stuff called BacOff. It is wintergreen flavored tea leaf. I couldn't stand it, nasty stuff, but it worked for my brother in law. You can get it at any tabacco store. If you are home and the urge hits take a hot shower. It will help relax you. Also find something to occupy yourself. If your mind is on work or and game it wont think about chewing as much.
mossyhorn
What the heck is rubbing? From what I gather samething as chewing but it depends on where you live. My dads wife is from up north and ask me why I rub tabacco one day. I didnt know what to say...

Orion_70
I smoked for several years and started when I was young also. I tried several times to quit, sometimes it worked for a couple weeks, then I'd fall back into the same habits/routines. I finally took zyban (wellbutrin) and quit along with changing those bad habits. That's been 10+ yrs ago!
wtnhunt
Never been a smoker or tobacco user Cody, but like other addictive habits, I believe it is all about will power. If you want to do it, you can. Sometimes those hard bad habits are tough to give up, and while it is not exactly the same as tobacco, I used to drink pretty excessively back when I was younger and it was with regularity and even though it did not interfere with my job, I knew it was a problem. Kind of had a bit of a wake up call about a month before I started dating my wife, realized continuing down the road I was on would be a mistake and I quit completely in order to get control over my problem. Think with any type of addiction you have to first realize or admit to yourself that it is a problem and be totally honest with yourself, then figure out how best to deal with the problem. Dealing with my problem got a whole lot easier once I started dating my wife, I had good reason not to look back.
RangerClay
Being that you are young and a new smoker it wil be easier for you to quit. I've never smoked but I have several friends who did. From what they have told me, the hardest distraction was being around friends who still smoked and they jumped back into it for a while. If you are going to parties and such, try to stay away from others who smoke. It will be very hard at first but I know you can do it. I will pray for your success. And if you need moral support just shoot me a PM.
Heavy Metal
My dad quit smoking cold turkey after years of addiction. What he did (for the first time in his life BTW) was he went out and bought a mountain bike, bought a gym membership and every time he wanted a smoke (which was allot at first) he would literally screech off to the gym and either work out or shoot hoops. Or he would run into the garage and take off on his mountain bike. Something....anything when that craving comes, go do something. Plink with a gun, bow, anything you can think of that would work for you do it. By yourself a piece of crap fixer upper car or 4x4 or bike/atv for a few hundred bucks. Buy parts and work on it when you want a dip or want to buy a can of chew....go to the part store instead of the gas station! When you're done restoring it will be a huge victory. You can do it, no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

JJL
I quit..................It was the WORST 60 days of my life. I ran into my Doctor and he went and bought me a can. Said,"I looked like death without it." It'll take an act of God to make me try again, I'm praying he'll help.
fly
Started really smoking when I was in the military (18 years old). I was a pack every 1-2 day smoker for about 5 years. I also chewed a lot. I quit smoking in 1994 when my gradnfather passed away. He was a minister and had tried to get me to quit. I went through non-sincere attempts that would last a week or two but would start back up. I had a lot of respect for my grandfather so I decided to stop as the last thing I could do for him (and me). I'm proud to say I haven't had a smoke since 1994. I continued to chew until 2001. I was under the most stress I had ever had in my life at that time and thought I "needed to chew" more than ever. I was praying to God to help me through the stress and decided to let Him get me through and not the chew. I made it through the stress and haven't chewed in 8 years now. It took major will power and a belief that my body was not in control. That my mind would control my actions, not a drug or physical cravings. stevebeilgard
it was 1968, i was a stock broker smoking 3 plus packs a day, and when work was done i'd generally need a pint of whisky to settle down. a sweet young lady, who was my fiancee', asked me to quit because she wanted me around in our old age (in our 40's, lol). i quit cold turkey and never looked back. boy, since i'm in my 60's now and very happy, i'm real glad she asked me to quit. DO IT NOW!!!

Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I started in high school and quit a few years after graduating. I quit cold turkey. Now, anytime someone opens a can around me I gag.
sasksheds
I started smoking when I was young. I was HOOKED when I was 11 years old. Yes 11 years old. Small town Saskatchewan you did what everyone else was doing to fit in. I also started drinking @ 11. Hockey, curling, booze & smokes went with everything esp. if you wanted to be one of the guys. I finally quit smoking when I was 23. I wanted to make a life change. Something that I could do to make my life better. So I started with quitting smoking. I would go to bed everynight wishing & praying that I could quit smoking & change my life for the better. But because I wanted to, not anybody else. That's a huge factor. I always kept my smokes on me or within reach. I read that it helped to keep them available. As not to be stressed out that you didnt have any. Showers curved cravings but what really helped was chewing sunflower seads one @ a time. Just like you were taking a drag off of a smoke. It was a habbit thing that kept my fingures busy & my mind occupied. It wasn't easy. They compare nicotine addiction to Heroin & its true. I would wake up @ night laying flat on my back trying to suck in all the smoke that was rising from around my bed. Ya funny now but not then. I hope this helps & I really hope you can quit. Have faith in yourself & if it's your thing, pray. It got me through. Good luck.
Arkansas Boy
my question is this and it may not be a popular one, but if you are only 18 now, how in the world and why in the world would you ever start? I mean people from my parents generation and further back have an excuse. It was glamorous and marketed and the norm (from movie stars, to billboards, magazines, etc.), but now it is frowned upon by society, prices have sky-rocketed, you can't put the ads anywhere, you can't smoke in most restaurants, we now know what cigarettes can do to a human body and yet somehow you decided this was a good choice? Also, noone that I have ever talked to that smoked liked it when they first started. If you watch a new smoker, they cough, spit, and look very uncomfortable, so you trained yourself to like them and if you can do that you can train yourself to quit. Find something worth spending money on
unioncountyslayer
Cody, you may also want to check into alternatives. For me, dipping was definitely an addiction that I picked up after quiting smoking. For me smoking was easier to quit cold turkey. But it's that oral fixation of having a dip in your mouth that I struggled with. I turned to an all natural product called Smokey Mountain Snuff (no tobacco, no nicotine). You get that same feeling without the harmful ingredients. I still use it from time to time, but I'm past the addictive stage that comes with the nicotine. Good luck bud! Here is a link to Smokey Mountain Snuff. http://www.smokeysnuff.com/ If you have a Wal-Mart Close by they sell it there. Give it a try. And again, I ask...what the heck is rubbing?!
