JJL
I've got the itch for a black bear trip....... and it's starting to itch real bad. I would appreciate some info from you Bear experts. I've been looking at Northern Manitoba, or possibly Northern Minnesota. The Minnesota trip would be an easy drive for me, and that would be a plus. But, airfare to Manitoba or Saskatchewan would not be out of the question. Any info would be appreciated, whether it's in these regions or others, I'd like to hear about your trips. Thanks, JJL
stevebeilgard
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s if you can go further, prince of wales island, alaska has lots of hugh bears. some in the 8' class. black only. mostly free hunting on govt. land. and yes, i did say 8' black bears. you'll see a dozen bears daily, with 3 being 7' or larger

JimT
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s I would say Alaska or Canada for the best chances for a good bear. Do your homework when selecting a guide for sure.
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s Are you planning a spot & stalk or hunting over bait. Rough rule of thumb is a 5' 6" is an average bear. A 6' is a good bear. 6' 6" is Huge. Anything bigger -----is in the same class as a grizzly IMO. superguide
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s There's great bear hunting up here in Saskatchewan-lots of colour phase bears in our neck of the woods. The thing here is that bear outfitting is actually increasing the bear population. The main predator of bear cubs is old boar bears which is what most hunters shoot. Missed160
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s Lots of Bears in Mn.. Tons of state land in Northern Mn, that is very lightly hunted. The state is divided up into zone, and some areas you can buy over the counter tags, some require a drawing, but they are pretty easy to get.. There are some people who do guide for bears, and can help you set up bait stations. Up here you can start baiting around Aug 1. The season runs about Set 1- Oct 1.. fisherguy
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s Depends what you want. Best chance for colour phase bear is Saskatchewan, Northern Manitoba and Sask have some real monsters as well. If you want something a bit cheaper try northwestern ontario. Bear population has exploded since the spring hunt closure. There are some hawgs, and colour phase, but in general most bears will be from 150 to 325 pounds. Wherever you go research the outfitter well, contact lots of references, and try to get word of mouth info from people off forums and such. That is the best way IMO since you will get it all, not just what teh outfitter wants you to hear.
Leo
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s Big bears are tough critters to hunt. Many guys will shoot the first one they see and then tell everyone it was a 7ft 300lber. They reality of it is many of these folks are shooting the 1 1/2 yr old boars that weigh 150lbs. Before you believe anyone about the size of the bear they got at such and such place. Go see it or get a picture.
otdrzmn04
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s check out woodsbowhunting.com. i looked around and talked to many outfitters and they seemed to be the best. 3 of us are going up in aug. If this is your first bear hunt i would recommend going with someone who does most if not all the work for you. Most everything is included in their hunts(3 meals a day, tags, lodging, and you can hunt wolf for $35 more because of the problems their having with them. If you contact them tell them larry payne sent ya.
fisherguy
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s You should have a good trip, they owned teh archer shop in my town for a while and are first rate people. I think their bear camp is a ways away, but they have a solid reputation.
Norm Sauceman
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s I want to go on a Father and Son trip some time. I am thinking about next Spring.. I may post something later on this Spring and see what we can do for a Realtree Father and Son/daughter/wife.. or something like that Spring Bear hunt. Maybe we can get a really good rate somewhere and have a get together like we did here in Tennessee that time. What do you think about that.. You think it would spark any interest? If so, I will pin something up about it later.

Leo
Re: Bear hunt ? ? ?\'s Norm I think these folks have a pretty good size operation. I know they are equipped to handle wheelchair bound hunters. They seemed like nice folks when I met them in Memphis. The Bears Lair
